My intent is to provide you with some tools for tackling your issues on your own. I don't however, intend to imply that in all instances deep-seated hurts can be satisfactorily healed with these methods. While this book will help you identify important themes in your life, some of you will find that you'll want or need some professional guidance. A dialogue with a therapist can offer support for a deeper exploration and understanding of your history, emotions, and current patterns of behavior.

I wondered why I felt like a visitor to planet Earth

I am now 54. For the last 40+ years I have felt I have never ‘belonged’. I felt like a ‘visitor’ to this world. Since my late teens I knew something wasn’t right. That started years of on-again/off-again counselling.

Never having been able to have any close (intimate) relationships and always using my work as an excuse I didn’t marry until my mid-30s. In hindsight I wanted to have a family of my own, to be a great mother and wife.

I knew somewhere in my heart I would not be like my mother. That’s all I knew!

My marriage turned out to be one of psychological and verbal abuse (unrecognised at the time as domestic violence). When I finally left, my mother sold her house to enable me to buy in with her to provide a home for me and my children. Little did I know then, I made a deal with the devil.

My ex-husband was awarded custody of our children and during the last five years of trying desperately to protect them from him, I educated myself and had counselling - and was on my way to healing.

In my quest for further information for a friend, I came across My Parent’s Keeper - I ordered it, and read it and finally all the pieces were put together.

My daughter has had to be a ‘mother/wife’ to her father for the last 4 years. Unfortunately, she is still too young (17 years) to appreciate this book - but it is up there as something she needs to read and recognize.

My life was with a mother who was never there for me emotionally (and still isn’t) - she is a narcissist. My ex-husband is one too but he is an abuser.

This book put all the pieces of the jigsaw of my life together. I believed I was no-one. But I am lucky - I have already done a lot of the work suggested. Now I’m more determined to face my fears.

This book has helped free me and reinforced that I am someone who is worthy and deserves better.

Changed my life

A **great** book.

My journey: This book affected me profoundly. I bought it on whim. From the begining, reading it felt like somebody had written a book about my innermost feelings (that I had never shared nor understood myself). The book opened doors, previously kept closed all my life by my denial. Its accurate description of my complex inner life enabled me to recognize myself and then seek help (out of my comfort zone). Recognizing home truths was upsetting at times. Yet the book gave me strength as it made me realize (i) I can heal & (ii) I am not "crazy." Finally I could "name" my problem- thus it led me to a good therapist who met my needs. (I had sought treatment before - but partly "outsmarted" the therapist to not see the root cause, "protecting" her - typical adult child behavior).

Why do I mention this? Simply because, if the above "rings a bell" and you suspect you are a "parentified child" - then I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The book is split to two. The first section- the description of the parentified child was most useful to me. The second section deals with practical advice that can be used in a therapeutic environment (my therapist did not take this path though so I cannot vouch for it).

The author is knowledgable and experienced. The writing style is clear and a good range of illustrations are given.

Helpful to Adult Children of the Emotionally Ill

The various needs of adult children of the emotionally ill (as well as of younger such children) are not sufficiently catered to by the self help literature. And typically what is available is insufficient. This book helps fill this need.

The adult children of the mentally ill are people of equal stature to those who did not have to endure these experiences. But equal does not mean the same. These adult children need to be assisted to understand, heal and to cope with the challenges of their adult lives. It is hard for anyone to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. And such assistance needs to deliver.

There is a lot involved in delivering a book that really assists adult children of the mentally ill. Several around are so simplistic that they are suitable only to a very limited audience. This book does rise considerably above such a level and so it can help - to a point. But the point it gets to is helpful. Books that take it further would meet further needs & would find a receptive audience.

Despite my feeling of gratitude to the author for writing a book that is both gentle and understanding and can offer much needed aid, I feel I need to share a concern I have about this book. The author reasonably often overgeneralizes when she details the experiences of these adults. Thus many people will find themselves being told how things were for such children BUT it was not so for them. This can be simply irrelevant and unhelpful for the reader who has reached a reasonable level of wisdom and personal growth and so can take the best and leave the rest with a shrug. And there is a lot of "best" to gain from. But this overgeneralization could be confusing or even destabilizing to a reader who is struggling to a greater degree and strikes this lack of fit between his or her experience and how things supposedly happen. We are talking of an audience with a tendency to feeling that are unworthy and flawed. A lack of validation could be disturbing to the more vulnerable. The ones who have progressed further will simply recognize that the author is being inaccurate at those times.

Nevertheless, the book is worth reading and an adult child of an emotionally ill parent can be assisted by it. And any assistance helps. Relevant assistance is a blessing to these survivors as they can still be struggling and suffering, trying to find their way.

Dynamic Opening Theory via Pawns-Force-Space-Time +++

This work is very interesting in several ways. "Modern Chess Opening Theory" is just that [and mine is a non-algebraic paperback by-the-way]. But, as Chess has gone thru so many phases of development and explanation, an attempt to effectively present its opening theory -- would seem to have to be too thin and abstact OR too long and detailed to be useful for many living players of Chess. This book succeeds in presenting effective dynamic opening theory in moderate detail in a moderate sized manual. This is likely due to ongoing reliance on Chess Elements of Pawns-Force-Space-Time to sufficiently streamline the necessarily very detailed anaysis.

This reader and player also appreciates the respect shown for all the various main styles of Chess -- despite the author coming from an earlier Hypermodern = Soviet = Russian background. The earlier Hypermodern style is indeed effective and due respect -- and a favorite of this reader and player. Yet, other main styles are due respect [and usage]. All of this is demonstrated in this work in rational detail -- that necessarily goes into whole-game detail as the phases cannot be separated -- opening-middlegame-ending. Via the analysis of the work under review -- quite Pawns-Force-Space-Time based -- it has been found that many older and newer styles and lines of play are still valid or newly valid. Therefore, there is plenty of room for personal style -- and one may end-up choosing Chess resources at least partly based-on personal preference. For all-out up-to-date total opening-middlegame-ending detail one may nowadays have to explore massive computer resources online and offline. For folks below, say chess-rating 2000, this may slow-down game-playing progress, however.

One big lesson I have learned from this deep work is -- that something like a Semi-Hypermodern approach to Chess is good [for me] -- respecting most styles and lines of play while choosing my own main style -- say Semi-Hypermodern. Why the title of this book?
After the publication of How to Survive a Pisces, I was asked by my clients if I was going to write about their sign, so I embarked on writing about each sign of the Zodiac. As I'd started
with my own sign, Pisces, the last sign, I thought I'd go backwards
through the Zodiac. Why not?
And as I'd promised myself to go backwards, it then meant I had to write about Capricorn after Aquarius.
This wasn't an easy option.
Even though I have a sister who is Capricorn, a dear Homeopathic friend (whose husband is also Capricorn) and two second cousins, the more I thought about, or read about Capricorns, the more it seemed it would be an uphill struggle. I then had to think of a title, one that would inspire others to learn about this sign, but also to help those that struggle with the sign themselves. I wasn't going to write just about the fun side of the sign; I needed to write about their Achilles heel. The thing that other people think they struggle with, which I found is 'being happy'.
And to make the writing of this book more meaningful, just as I got to the last chapter and was 'tidying-things-up', I suffered an unexpected and humungous computer crash which effectively wiped-away 50% of this book... and turned it into hieroglyphics. No amount of software fixes would recreate 4 months of work and over 12,000 words and I was left with the sorry task of having to rewrite the last 3 chapters. The only people who truly knew how I felt were other authors, of which my older sister Lucy is one, and after spending the weekend weeping and cursing Jupiter and Uranus retrograde, her sympathetic ear and reminder to 'back-up EVERYWHERE' brought me some solace and I carried on... even though I felt very UN-happy.
It was during this sad episode that I realised I had to call upon my own Saturn (which you will learn about soon) which is luckily in Capricorn, so I could: 'grit teeth, nose to the grindstone, no use making a fuss, get on with it', otherwise you wouldn't be reading this book at all. It also gave me some understanding of Capricorn's need to succeed, and get the job done regardless.

Relevant, practical & meaningful tips

I read this book in one sitting. (I have ADD and this is unheard of for me.) It was very easy to understand, even though I have some astrology knowledge, it still kept me interested. To confess, I gave up on today's astrology books because they were either too impersonal or too mindnumbingly difficult to follow. Too many of these other astro books are either unresearched or too heavily academic - this one is on pointe! How did that happen?? The write is very conversational and anecdotal, while giving reliable tips you can actually use in life. A practical astrology book? Who would have thought it? Ms. English did. Her book makes it relevant. I wish I had this book growing up as a Cap-rising with two Cappie parents. My teen years would have been a lot smoother. My whole world was Capricornian and if I read this book then, I would have had a much easier time understanding how to deal with Saturn and what it wants from us a lot better. Alas, you lucky people get to have it. :) Overall, I have discovered Mary English and I really look forward to her other books. Very Interesting, Though I'm A Bit Biased

Being a magician myself this looked interesting to me. An entertaining read and I hope Mr. Costa can find a way to continue it. A fairly well-crafted story, though it could have been a little longer with the characters better developed. Also, would have liked to know a bit about the "event" that started the whole thing, but that is being nit-picky on my part. It's not really essential to the main storyline. Good artwork and an interesting story.

Interesting Alternate Earth

I was going through the graphic novel section of the library when I came across this book. I liked this story. It had many unexpected twists and turns. The alternate world developed by Costa is logical and consistent (with the exception of both speaking English). He layered the story well, dropping little surprises here and there that kept me interested throughout.

Imagine a world where magic was real and really worked on established and understood principles. A world similar to ours, but not identical. This is the world that stage magician Terry Ward finds himself in. To survive he becomes a street performer, is tricks and illusions--never seen on this world before--are as amazing to people there as to people here.

He has created a solitary existence for himself, always afraid that he will be discovered for being the only nonmagical person on the planet. Ethan is a young man who is not satisfied with the commonplace magic of his world. When he sees Ward perform, he is mystified, and batters his way past Ward's emotional defenses to become his pupil.

Before the story is finished, Ward finds himself up against one of the most accomplished magicians of this world he's found himself in.

It's a good one-shot graphic novel. Worth giving it a read.

Never read anything else quite like it

Ethan’s growing up in a world powered by magic. It makes lights, cars, washing machines, and computers work. He’s pretty gifted with it himself, but what he’s really interested in is the guy in Tobin Square who’s doing some *other* kind of magic that Ethan doesn’t understand. Yet.

This is an interesting book combining “real” magic and stage magic, as well as friendship and fighting evil. I wish this would have been an ongoing series, because I really wanted to know what happened next for these characters! But it does have an ending, so I’m trying to count my blessings.
