About the Author

Perry J. Kaufman has over thirty years of experience in the equity and derivatives markets. A prominent expert on systematic trading, he travels internationally, lecturing to funds, governments, and portfolio managers. He began his career in the aerospace industry, working on the navigation and control systems of the Gemini space program. The markets captured his attention in the early 1970s, and he was one of the first to develop computer models for making market decisions. Kaufman developed a portfolio optimization program that operates on disjoint equity series output from a trading environment. He has created market-neutral strategies, stat-arb trading methods, short-term program trading for cash, and derivative market instruments for institutional and commercial applications. Kaufman was the first chairman of the advisory board of the Vermont Securities Institute, and has served on the Director's Committee of Columbia University's Center for the Study of Futures Markets, founding the Journal of Futures Markets. In 2002, he taught a landmark course in systematic trading at the graduate school of Baruch College. Perry Kaufman is the author of several popular trading books including A Short Course in Technical Trading and Alpha Trading.

Good content, but website is missing a lot of referenced material

I read every version of this book. It is my reference book of choice a large majority of the time. So I rushed out to get this one as soon as i heard it was available. There's a lot of new content in here as well as updates to previous examples given. But on the website if your actually using that to reconstruct the examples your going to run into problems. I have been talked with Wiley and have identified at least 7 missing, or incorrect files in the downloads. I have yet to see much of an update on that front. They told me they have to talk to the editor. I think having the website material and being able to work with the programs yourself is crucial aspect for this book. It loses a lot of that with broken or missing files. I would give this 5 stars but the missing files really bring it down for me.

There are only a couple of other books that endeavor to fill this space and they're not bad. My preference for this book is base

Trading System and Methods is the ultimate encyclopedic reference of technical trading systems for the modern trader. There are only a couple of other books that endeavor to fill this space and they're not bad. My preference for this book is based on several factors.

First of all, the author is very clear about sources and does an excellent job of both grouping the source material that is in the same vein and distinguishing the nuances promoted by individual developers. Second, the systems are broken down to mechanical components. Other authors have to show a lot of charts illustrating the trade ideas, which makes me reluctant to even consider their backtest results.

For me this book is great for inspiring system development ideas and getting another developers views on how to program the logic for certain trading ideas. I'm digging back into new systems development and this is my cornerstone reference to get the juices flowing and at least get me to the end of the runway with a few possibilities.

It might be worthwhile to mention that I remembered to write this review, because I was cleaning up some old emails and saw some correspondence that I had with Perry, the author. I had a question about files that are provided with the book and he was very prompt and gracious in providing me with the answer to my question.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION

The focus in this edition remains the same as in the first: to provide strategies for technical professionals to use as they reach audiences and collaborate on projects across borders of culture, language, and technology. In revising, I have reshaped some sections to reflect the rapidly changing context for technical communication. I've also incorporated new research findings and comments from students and colleagues.

The problems giving rise to communication remain muddled and multidimensional. To solve them, students must learn how to write and speak as global citizens as well as global engineers or health professionals or scientists. As in the first edition, I've taken an international context for granted. Science and technology are international activities, and an informed professional writes with the international community in mind. The pervasiveness of the Internet and especially the Web only underscores this reality.

As I reviewed the first edition, I kept in mind how current information technology aids—or hinders—good communication and looked for ways to update advice about using that technology. These updates appear overtly in the Electronic Edge feature boxes and are interwoven throughout the book wherever appropriate. One perhaps cynical observer notes that the Internet only lets bad information get to you faster. To avoid such risks, students will find here expanded strategies for managing information in a 24/7 world.

In this edition, too, design takes center stage. To adapt a line from Alice in Wonderland (the original is quoted at the beginning of Chapter 10): "Much of what you see depends on how it looks." Extensive research in academe and the marketplace confirms the central role of design in shaping the content of information products. In light of this research and my own years as an avid observer of the visual world, I thoroughly revised Part 3 on expression. The revision reverses the order of the first edition (sentences to visuals to design). In this edition, design comes first, followed by advice on composing visuals and then on composing text. Design issues also thread through the chapters on individual genres as well as oral presentations. In addition, to practice what we preach, we redesigned the look of this edition.

In other ways, too, I hope to have enhanced elements of the first edition without messing up what readers found attractive there. Several chapters have been edited for greater crispness and clarity following excellent suggestions from students and reviewers. The Crossing Cultures and A Closer Look feature boxes remain, most in updated form. So do the models, cases, exercises, and checklists readers depended on to make rhetorical concepts come alive. (Badgered by reviewers and students, however, I reluctantly let the Chapter 1 rats go.) The focus in this edition remains the same as in the first: to provide strategies for technical professionals to use as they reach audiences and collaborate on projects across borders of culture, language, and technology. In revising, I have reshaped some sections to reflect the rapidly changing context for technical communication. I've also incorporated new research findings and comments from students and colleagues.

The problems giving rise to communication remain muddled and multidimensional. To solve them, students must learn how to write and speak as global citizens as well as global engineers or health professionals or scientists. As in the first edition, I've taken an international context for granted. Science and technology are international activities, and an informed professional writes with the international community in mind. The pervasiveness of the Internet and especially the Web only underscores this reality.

As I reviewed the first edition, I kept in mind how current information technology aids—or hinders—good communication and looked for ways to update advice about using that technology. These updates appear overtly in the Electronic Edge feature boxes and are interwoven throughout the book wherever appropriate. One perhaps cynical observer notes that the Internet only lets bad information get to you faster. To avoid such risks, students will find here expanded strategies for managing information in a 24/7 world.

In this edition, too, design takes center stage. To adapt a line from Alice in Wonderland (the original is quoted at the beginning of Chapter 10): "Much of what you see depends on how it looks." Extensive research in academe and the marketplace confirms the central role of design in shaping the content of information products. In light of this research and my own years as an avid observer of the visual world, I thoroughly revised Part 3 on expression. The revision reverses the order of the first edition (sentences to visuals to design). In this edition, design comes first, followed by advice on composing visuals and then on composing text. Design issues also thread through the chapters on individual genres as well as oral presentations. In addition, to practice what we preach, we redesigned the look of this edition.

In other ways, too, I hope to have enhanced elements of the first edition without messing up what readers found attractive there. Several chapters have been edited for greater crispness and clarity following excellent suggestions from students and reviewers. The Crossing Cultures and A Closer Look feature boxes remain, most in updated form. So do the models, cases, exercises, and checklists readers depended on to make rhetorical concepts come alive. (Badgered by reviewers and students, however, I reluctantly let the Chapter 1 rats go.) Blister prone? Read this to conquer the #1 foot care problem athletes face!

Blisters have long been the #1 food care problem facing runners, hikers, marathoners, ultrarunners - in fact most athletes. Anyone who says they never get blisters simply needs to wait a bit longer, because at some point we all get them. Rebecca Rushton, a podiatrist from Australia, has studied blister formation, read research papers, tried techniques at races, and learned what works and doesn't work. Many athletes have given in to blisters as part of the cost of doing their sport.

Fortunately, Rebecca's The Blister Prone Athlete's Guide to Preventing Foot Blisters, is written in clear and concise language with excellent images to show how to both prevent and care for blisters. It's value is two-fold. First, it provides an accurate explanation about blister causes and formation. Secondly, it provides instruction on how to both prevent and treat blisters in the most common areas of the foot: heels, arch, ball of the foot, and toes. This is a valuable book than can help anyone who takes the time to digest its contents and advice. I highly recommend it to all athletes.

A Must-Read Guide for Athletes Suffering From Foot Blisters!

Rebecca has done a fantastic job with presenting valuable information about blister prevention & relief in her new book, The Blister Prone Athlete's Guide to Preventing Foot Blisters. There's so much bad or incomplete information online about blister care, it's refreshing to read about the topic from somebody with practical knowledge of the skin issues that athletes frequently experience.

I received an advanced copy of the book, free-of-charge and especially appreciated how Rebecca broke down each chapter based on the location of the blister - heel, edge, arch, ball of foot, and toes. It makes it much easier for people to focus on the particular issue they're facing and the products and techniques that have proven effective to treat blisters in that location.

Rebecca knows how to stop blisters!

Rebecca's helpful and comprehensive advice has helped me so much as a runner! I suffered an 8 week blood toe blister that would have kept me off the roads for months had I not used some of the strategies in her book. I received an advanced copy of the book and I love it as it's fun to read and the diagrams are colorful and easy to understand. I have recently had to purchase orthodics to help with some of my blister issues and am hoping the combination of biomechanics and Rebecca's book will see me to the end of several finish lines! A must read if your a runner with blister problems!

This textbook was so simple that I gave it up after the first few minutes. The authors highlight the most trivial concepts in their extremely wide margins. They write nothing of substance. I tossed it in the recycle bin as soon as my class was over. What a waste of paper!

About the Author
John Coates is a senior research fellow in neuroscience and finance at the University of Cambridge. He previously worked on Wall Street for Goldman Sachs, and ran a trading desk for Deutsche Bank. In 2004 he returned to Cambridge to research the biology of financial risk-taking. A fulfilling book packed with information and ideas

After reading this book, I am convinced of the mind-body connection and the many ways we may "think with our bodies." Unlike what the title and cover suggests, the book is not totally about the "biology of the stock market", but uses the stock market as a central storytelling device (while giving a novelists' insider view of the trading floor), to advance the author's theories about how intertwined our various nonconscious organs are with our supposedly rational thoughts. It's quite an eye opener for those who like a bit more substance. Very much recommended.

interesting work on neurophysiology and impact on risk taking

The Hour between the Dog and the Wolf is about risk taking, the nervous system and our biochemistry and how they all relate to each other in various feedback mechanisms. The book is both a combination of a scientific introduction to the way the nervous system and body work together and a fictional narrative of the trading floor in a bank. The narrative is used to describe the real time emotional changes felt by traders in response to their changing risk and profit environments. The book is informative and readable and I came out of it better understanding myself. The book is split into 4 distinct parts.

The first section is titled Mind and Body in the Financial Markets. The backdrop is the internet bubble and questions of exuberance in markets is pondered. The author introduces testosterone and cortisol as potential active molecules in impacting decision. Basic concepts of mind body separation are included. The author then goes on to describe the mind as facilitating the body. He discusses how if one view our purpose in life as to move, then the mind is just an elaborate mechanism to facilitate that movement more productively. This helps give the platform to understand us as being always being a vehicle for movement and that we should not deny the signals our body sends us.

The second section - Gut Thinking discusses the way our instincts can propogate through the nervous system. He discusses how our body's instincts operate on a much faster speed than our computational thought. This subject matter is similar to that of many behavioural scientists and is akin to Kahneman in fast and slow thinking. The value of relying on instincts is studied and our instincts are shown to be very good at pattern recognition which can fail when we are faced with randomness. The inclusion of our muscle responses to our nervous system and our internal feedbacks helps give an overall view of our various mind body relationships.

The 3rd section Seasons of the Market discusses various market regimes and how our body chemistry in each of those regimes is different. Searching for opportunity, riding waves of profit or enduring catastrophic losses are all discussed via narratives of characters the author uses. It helps make sense of real life situations and how we are all biased agents when it comes down to it. This section is where the author really weaves in the impact on financial decision making.

The author concludes with discussing the difference between various types of people and how environment and activity can affect our instincts and our feedback mechanisms. We all have some plasticity and though we inevitably are impacted by the stresses around us we can handle them differently and experience matters. The author then goes on to give partial solutions to dampening the positive and negative feedback loops our body creates in risk taking behaviour to improve our financial system.

All in all The Hour Between the Dog and the Wolf is a very informative account of the way we work in stressful environments and how those environments affect the way we think and act in an active fashion. I much preferred the scientific explanation instead of the specific impact on trading as the lessons are very broad and are relevant to much more than trading. One does not come out of reading the book having a clear path to more robust financial management as that is extremely challenging but one does come through it with more insight about how we work.

Market Behavior is Human Behavior

Investors are well served by studying behaviorial and decision-making psychology broadly and then selectively transferring that knowledge to financial markets. Arguably, the most influential readings come from authors who are not directly involved in financial markets. For example, the Psychology of Intelligence Analysis by former CIA staffer Richard Heuer captures the pitfalls of making decisions when faced with incomplete information. Stepping back further, to readings about the emerging discipline of neuroeconomics, requires a basic understanding of brain science and physiology. There are some useful layman's guides to these subjects, such as Brain Rules by John Medina but what's been missing is a book that ties together a cohesive explanation of why your brain and physiology drive your behavior and how this collective impact can translate into a greater understanding of market behavior. The Hour Between Dog and Wolf succeeds in this objective. Using both plain language and vivid trading room stories, author John Coates has written an important book for finance industry professionals who want to expand their understanding of the biological underpinnings of behaviorial finance.

The book's fictitious examples of trading floor scenarios are particularly effective. Science always becomes more interesting when its explained with personalized situations. Coates has succeeded in connecting the neuroscience with the behaviorial / cognitive psychology that's most relevant to investors. Finally, the 'suggested reading' section is excellent, a primer for further study that's accessible to non-scientists.

Great source of Proposal Information

Great source of information. Of course 2 weeks after I bought this Shipley came out with this book in eBook format. The only thing that would have been better, is if Shipley would have provided the sample templates in some type of electronic format from a website. It would eliminate some time, rather than having to recreate them from scratch.
