Good but not 'as good'

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars but I'm going with three. I love the Embattled series but this one was my least favorite. It's probably not fair to compare books but Embattled SEAL just doesn't hold a candle to the others. Cat is a good wife and mother who rushes to her husband's bedside when he is severely injured. She did so despite Harper walking out on her and their two kids several months ago with little to no communication since then. I get why he did so, but that doesn't really make it right imho.The book tells the tale of her perseverance to save their relationship, and his determination to recover his both health and his family. The rebuilding of their relationship is satisfying. The bond between Harper and his colleagues at LNF is too. The commitment he shows to 'righting' the wrongs he inflicted on his family is commendable, as is his service to our country as a SEAL. But the plot is a little lacking and a conflict with a bad guy seems forced in an effort to set up a rescue. While, overall, this one didn't work for me it absolutely does get points for strong characters who love deeply, some pretty heady action between the sheets, and for allowing me to revisit some of my favorite characters from LNF. Even with only three stars, Embattled SEAL is better than several books I've read this year... just not up to the incredibly high bar set by Embattled Minds, Embattled Home, Embattled Christmas or Embattled Road. That said, I'm hopeful that there are many more Embattled books and I'll keep reading them. Great author, very strong and independent lead women characters, and men that any woman would be proud to love and be loved by.

Not her best

Harper, the sniper of "Lost and Found" was seriously wounded during the last operation. The Team took him to the hospital, where a woman burst into his room and insisted that she is Harper' s wife and the mother of his children. How can that be? Nobody at "Lost and Found" knew that Harper was married, needless to say a father. What happened to the couple and does their relation have a second chance?

Basically this book started exactly where the previous installment stopped, which was when Harper was delivered to the hospital. Although this book could be read as a stand-alone, I still think it would help to read the books sequentially.

I loved Cat's "take charge" mentality and appreciated how she fought for Harper and their common future. Her character was presented realistically and well balanced. Harper's character on the other hand was depicted more one-dimensional. However, the consequences that his service to the country had on himself, his life and in the continuation to the people who are important to him was heart wrenching.

The scenery of the book was very limited. Mainly it played in Harper's hospital room and in the house Cat rented for his recovery. Equally, the set of characters involved in the plot was rather limited, focusing mainly on Harper and Cat. Throughout the story line there was very little involvement of subcharacters. Only during the introduction at the beginning and only very shortly towards the end of the story were more secondary characters involved. This monotony couldn't be outbalanced by the plot and soon I felt that the book faltered. The overly sweet happy-end even enhanced the impression that the book didn't meet my expectations.

As a huge fan of the "Lost and Found" series I sadly have to admit that I was slightly disappointed by this installment. However, I'm patiently looking foreward to the next installment and hope that this will be on Duncan. In any case, if youre a fan of the series you don't want to miss out this installment - even if it isn't the best installment.

A Love like no other is worth fighting for

I received this as an ARC from the writer for an honest review.
Harper Preston is a very private man and he keeps his emotions held tight. The guys at LNF don't know much about his life other than he was a highly trained sniper and a Navy SEAL. No one knew that he had a wife, until she shows up at the hospital to be by his side. With Cat there taking charge of Harpers recovery, she lets him know that she's ready to give their love another try. Will he take her up on it or are the ghosts of his past too much for him? Are his wounds (both physical and mental) too deep to work past?
Get a box of tissues for this one! I loved Harper and Cat's story and I know that you will too!

I fully trust that others know what is best for them ...

The beauty of this book is that it encapsulates the information in exactly the way the scribes of Lao-tzu had probably imagined. It's easy on the eyes, nice to hold and fails to bog down, unlike previous editions that I've seen that often have twenty page introductions, giant prefaces and essays embedded in the prologue. This offering is void of all the nonsense.

Often, other versions and publications of this text is offered up in a dry and unflattering representation which causes the reader to strain the eye to the page, let alone the mind to the soul. This version gives you some of the most straightforward and fluid translations that I've read yet and is beautifully laid-out and well presented.

Dwyer prefaces each verse with a short mantra or prayer version that compliments the following verse very well and lets the mind wander even further along as you read each verse. A brilliant idea and very unassuming.

What more can be said about such a book that hasn't already been uttered?

On the Tao bandwagon

Here is Wayne's foray into the Tao. I really appreciated what Wayne has done. Decades ago when no one was speaking very clearly about inner development Wayne was there. Yep, even made it to big specials on PBS.

In this book Wayne combines a translation of the Tao with some practical, and mostly simple, if not simplistic, viewpoints as to how to orient your life to the wisdom in the Tao. Generally the material is OK.

However, for some years I have felt that Wayne's material has not kept up with where we need to go. Folks can only wander/slog through the self-help stuff until they stop reading what others are saying and really help themselves. For myself and many of my friends self-help was a temporary way point on the path to inner realization. Problem is that Wayne has not evolved his style to get people graduated. Wayne, like others leans heavily on others work (in this case Lao Tze) and repackages it as self-help / new age wares. And I have to say my feedback of this book and Waynes material is that he is sincere but is unable to really support those folks deeply on the path.

Wayne's guru was Sri Siva Baba Dattatreya and Baba is light years beyond what Wayne is able to communicate. Baba's videos are visible on the tube of you.

For a Tao/Dao de Ching translation I think you are far better served with Tao Te Ching: The New Translation from Tao Te Ching: The Definitive Edition (Tarcher Cornerstone Editions) That is if you are ready to take off the training wheels and ask yourself what does the Tao mean to you.

An Esthetically Pleasing Version of the Tao

If you are searching for an esthetically pleasing version of the classic Tao, this is it. The small book has a nice feel and look to it and its compact size perfect for a meditation area.

Dyer presents the Tao Te Ching with corresponding affirmations.

For those unfamiliar with the work, the Tao was written over 2500 years ago, by the Chinese scholar Lao-Tzu.

Here is the 76th verse:

A man is born gentle and weak;
at his death he is hard and stiff.
All things, including grass and tress,

dry and brittle in death.

flexibility a companion of life.

Invaluable

About the Author
Stephen James O'Meara is author of several highly acclaimed books, including others in the celebrated Deep-Sky Companions series. He is well known for his precise drawings of astronomical objects as seen through the telescope, his engaging and informative writing style and for his remarkable skills as a visual observer. Steve spent much of his early career on the editorial staff of Sky and Telescope, before joining Astronomy magazine as its Secret Sky columnist and a contributing editor. An award-winning visual observer, he was the first person to sight Halley's Comet on its return in 1985 and the first to determine visually the rotation period of Uranus. One of his most distinguished feats was the visual detection of the mysterious spokes in Saturn's B-ring before most spacecraft imaged them. Amongst his achievements, Steve has received the prestigious Lone Stargazer Award, the Omega Centauri Award and the Caroline Herschel Award. Asteroid 3637 was named O'Meara in his honor by the International Astronomical Union. In his spare time, Steve travels the world to document volcanic eruptions. He is a contract videographer for National Geographic Digital Motion and a contract photographer for the National Geographic Image Collection.

Excellent addition to the Deep Sky Companions series...

This is the fourth volume of what has become a series: Deep Sky Companions. The previous 3 volumes covered the "Messier Objects in the first volume, and the so-called "Caldwell Objects" in volume two. I have not yet read volume three, "Hidden Treasures," but after this volume "The Secret Deep," be assured that the third volume will be purchased shortly.

I gave this particular work only 4 stars...not for any lack in Mr. O'Meara's writing skills, but the object selection is tending towards "lame," to use a phrase from my young son. The number of interesting astronomical objects capable of being dredged up in a small (in this case a 5" refractor)telescope is reaching a point of diminishing return, especially if one does not have the pristine skies of the island of Hawaii! That said, I have observed numerous objects listed in the book. Some of the open star clusters aren't what one would call "spectacular" to say the least, but the selection of planetary nebulae and globular clusters is wonderful. I've viewed many of these on my own over the past 10 years.

The format is excellent, and the finding directions...adequate. These are not easy astronomical objects to find and observe in many cases. That said, I would still recommend the purchase of this volume by any serious backyard astronomer. It's always nice to have new horizons to follow, and many of the listed objects have been added to my "to do" list. For those without pristine skies, a larger aperture telescope would be nearly a "must."

A Very Good Companion Book

Stephen O Mearas latest book The Secret Deep is a good companion book to his Hidden Treasures book.
I like to get background information to complement my observing list of deep-sky objects, and O Mearas books deal with
many in my list. It is not meant to be a book you just sit down and read, but as reference material it is in my opinion
unsurpassed.

As a Seattle area residents it is not often that we can appreciate the night sky thru our 8 inch SCT so Steve's book provides some excellent opportunities to enjoy what the sky has in store for us when it is very clear. We have just started using this book but our reading of it is exciting and challenging.

Classroom Lessons Transcribed

This book is actually Dr. Campbell Titchener's Feature Writing class lecture notes transcribed, and it is quite good. It's also useful for working newspaper folks to use as a reference book, to remind themselves, for instance, to include all the necessary components for a review of specific sorts of artistic endeavors.
Dr. Titchener read aloud much student work in the class I took, and he pulled no punches in evaluating the results. There was one unfortunate woman who could not capably put one word in front of another, yet she bubbled constantly about what a great writer she intended to be, all the books and plays and articles she was going to author. Dr. Titchener one day pronounced her work "trite" (he was absolutely correct), and it was extremely amusing to see the woman's cluelessly dismissive reaction, her declaration that he was "an idiot."
About three-fourths of the way into the semester, Dr. Titchener had an uncommon experience in his own life, and he wrote a short feature about it, which he read to the class. The response was brutal; students viciously ripped the piece up one page and down the other, and poor Dr. Titchener just sat there absorbing it all... sorta like body blows in a boxing match. He was the only college professor I ever encountered who had the guts to expose himself to an open-forum critique from his students, and you've really got to admire someone who has the fortitude to do that.

Good textbook for a Great Class

I took a class called "Reviewing the Arts" and this was our textbook, heavily supplemented by actual reviews from major newspapers. The book covers art, theater, music and the like. It's very readable and I only noticed one error in the name of the Martha Graham dance company, and apparently it's an error that has been there through several editions.

Overall, this would be a good read for a student or someone who is interested in writing reviews as a freelancer or for a hobby.

Everything will be okay ... once you admit that Dr. Laura's always right. This companion volume to the radio advice factory's 1994 bestseller (which tackled the stupid things women do) serves up plenty of the no-nonsense, old-fashioned morality that her legions of listeners love. Brutally reductive--but not necessarily wrong--this book chalks up men's problems to trying to save "damsels in distress," refusing to admit to a healthy dependence on others, climbing the career ladder to the detriment of your relationships, denying the duty and pleasure of child-rearing, and many others. Whatever your personal reaction to her brassy, unapologetic style, Dr. Schlessinger is a refreshing antidote to the wishy-washy "everything's relative and everyone's different" trend that held sway for a time. Outstanding

I only heard her show once, and was not impressed at all. But this book is quite excellent if you are trying to sort out your life, or what you may be going through or did go through. While I didn't find all the chapters worth reading, the ones I did like were very insightful, essentially doing mini case studies on what has happened with her callers, by relating their stories.
The first chapter, Stupid Chivalry, explores how guys who are "too nice" to women may be denying their real needs and therefore not being real. This backfires for the "nice" guy, but results in a dupe being available to be used by a woman who wants things done for her. Women want men who are real as mates. The chapter also explores guyus being nice because they may feel that their hand is so weak, that they welcome someone who has a lot of troubles so that they won't have to worry about being abandoned. They will feel needed. But unlikely is the case that they will be wanted for more than solving problems of the troubled woman.
The 6th chapter, Stupid Matrimony, explores idiotic motivations for getting married. "She's cute!" is one of them. With so many marriages ending in divorce, it is obvious that people do not always have the resources to think through what is drawing them towards marriage in a practical way. This book is an excellent eye-opener. Just because someone is wonderful to have fun with does not mean that you can overlook their flaws and get away with it. The message of this book, through the histories of her listeners is you will not get away with it. Having someone you can rely on and work with is very important. And making excuses for a woman's current behavior, if it isn't good for a relationship, won't make that behavior go away in the future.
In short, those two chapters were so good in helping me analyze my life that I picked up a copy of the book for a friend who has done some of the stupid things. This book is about seeing stupid things we can do as stupid, rather than just feeling our way through and thinking things will magically work out, and that we will be appreciate, or that the woman will behave better.
If you are trying to sort things out in you life, relative to women, this book should help you see a lot more clearly. And I say that having read many books on related areas.

Stereo typical men stuff

Many of the 10 things didn't apply to me personally, but that wasn't a surprise. However, one of the ten was right on the money & explained why I have made such bad choices in the past w/ choosing a woman. Now that I'm aware of my tendency, it helps me to be more selective & to not fall into the same trap.
