About the Author
Alex Mintz is Dean of the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at IDC-Herzliya, Israel. He is editor of the journal Political Psychology, former co-editor of Foreign Policy Analysis and associate editor of the Journal of Conflict Resolution. Mintz was the 2005 recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award for distinguished contribution to the field from the Foreign Policy Analysis section of the International Studies Association (ISA). He has published, edited, or co-edited nine books and is the author of multiple journal articles.

Karl DeRouen, Jr, is Professor of Political Science, Director of the International Studies Program, and a College of Arts and Science Faculty Fellow (2008-11) at the University of Alabama. His work has appeared in the Journal of Politics, International Organization, the Journal of Peace Research, the Journal of Conflict Resolution, the British Journal of Political Science and a number of other journals.

Honestly, right off the bat I never made it through the entire thing. Be warned, that the language in the book is very dense. I'm a political science major in my 4th year with a strong interest in foreign relations and even I found this tough to get through. This text is most appropriate for the current education and training climate in perioperative practice. Though apparently primarily designed for NVQ trainees, the book has much to offer student nurses and qualified staff working in operating departments. The opening chapters give an interesting overview of the basic principles of practice, including a clear explanation of the legal aspects of practice and the implications of this. Chapter 6-14 provide a very thorough grounding in all aspects of anaesthesia, while chapters 16 onwards cover surgery and recovery, with related anatomy and physiology included. Each chapter includes recommended further reading. Diagrams and charts are well used to clarify complex physiology and other relationships described in the text. The expanding complexity of perioperative practice is reflected in the inclusion of a chapter on endoscopy, laser and radiography equipment. Included in this is an explanation of the scientific principles of these diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The contributors offer a balance of medical, nursing and vocational backgrounds, and the text is comprehensively indexed for ease and convenience of use. As a Senior Lecturer teaching ENB 183 Anaesthetic and Operating Theatre Nursing, I shall certainly be recommending this text to my students. This book has been well conceived, planned and presented. The breadth of its coverage surpasses that of the current 'Bible' for ODP training (Understanding Anaesthesia by Carrie, Simpson and Popat) and it breaks new ground in terms of the material that is presented. This is in keeping with the diversity of its intended readership ('the generic theatre worker, be they nurse or anaesthetic assistant'). The sections about which I do know something as an anaesthetist (physiology, scientific principles of equipment and instrumentation, anaesthetic practice, emergency medicine) are clearly and concisely described in more than adequate depth and detail. I was considerably educated by the sections about which I know less than perhaps I should (ethics, the law, infection control, dressings and suture materials). I lent it to two experienced ODPs who are both involved in training and teaching, and retrieved it (with some difficulty) along with their comments. They both enthused, both commenting that they would use it as a reference work to consolidate their own training as a standard text. I shall include it in my suggestions for further reading for those undergraduate medical students who wish to widen their knowledge of operating department practice.

This is an excellent, informative book. It is ideal for newcomers to the operating department and in depth enough for existing operating department workers to brush up or add to existing knowledge. With an array of authors, all of whom are either still working in or teaching about operating department practices, this book provides up to date knowledge for the generic operating department worker. Whilst some books provide vague guidelines, this book provides a difinitive structure for practices. The information is broken down into topical chapters and reads easily. Whether it is just for personal reading, departmental reading or for reference, I strongly recommend that every operating department should own a copy of this book.

Thirty-eight sketchbooks by Degas have survived essentially intact. They cover the period between 1853 and 1886 and constitute the most significant sustained record of any Impressionist artist. His early sketchbook contains diligent student work, such as sketches of antique statuary and copies of Renaissance frescoes and paintings. The subjects range from the whimsical to the thoughtful, with quick portraits of dinner guests, sketches of dancers, and scenes from a Turkish bath in the later notebook. Degas' much-heralded explorations of dancers—in rehearsal, on stage, and at rest—began in the 1870s and intensified during the ensuing decades. This period also marked the beginning of his success as an artist. One of Degas' principal concerns as a draftsman was analyzing the movements and gestures of the female body.

Though noted for his attention to the female figure, Degas executed many studies of grouped horses and jockeys from which he would use figures in later compositions. Later in his career, Degas experimented with mixing drawing media and printmaking techniques. He began the drawing in 1885 using an impression from his 1877–78 lithographs of a concert at Café des Ambassadeurs, which he extended along the bottom and right edges, and drew over in dense strokes of pastel. Degas first produced a mono-type—a unique print made from drawing in ink on a metal or glass plate—of two singers on stage, seen from behind, with a view to the audience. He then enlivened the print with richly colored pastels. In the village of Diénay near Dijon, Degas recalled scenery from the drive through the Burgundian countryside and produced about fifty mono-type landscapes. To create this drawing, he used oil paint (and apparently his fingers) to indicate a few lines of landscape on the plate and printed one or two proofs, hanging them to dry. Later, he completed the composition with a rich layer of pastel.
