Jennifer Westall loves writing Christian fiction as a way of exploring her own faith journey. Breaking Matthew (2015) is the second volume in the Healing Ruby series. The first in the series, Healing Ruby (2014) was inspired by events in the life of her grandmother, and explores the mysteries of faith healing. She’s also the author of Love’s Providence (2012), a contemporary Christian romance novel that navigates the minefield of dating and temptation. She resides in southwest Texas with her husband and two boys, where she homeschools by day and writes by night, thus explaining those pesky bags under her eyes. Super sequel

I was quite excited to read the sequel to "Healing Ruby", which is the story of a young girl who has God given healing talent and her friend Matthew, who had tuberculosis as a young child. Ruby was hired to assist in Matthew's care, and ultimately God healed Matthew through Ruby.

The story picks up a few years later, in the same small town, divided by race. Matthew is now engaged and returns to town with his fiancé to make wedding plans. He sees Ruby from afar – the first time in years. He eventually takes a few moments to talk to Ruby.

Ruby has a major run in with the law and ends up in jail. Matthew sticks by her as her friend – one of the few people in the town whore on her side.

There are some great plot twists. I anticipated a few, but this is not a formula book. There were a couple twists that took me by surprise.

The first few chapters were quite slow for me, but after that, the story galloped. It was difficult to stop reading, even though I thought I knew what would happen. I was so so wrong!

If you like God-affirming, clean reads, this is it. Ms Westall has shown a light on the darker, prejudicial side of America's history as we watch this young lady stand firm on her convictions, along the way teaching her friends and family what it means to rest in "the peace of God which passed all understanding".

An action packed book you will not have to "bleep" out half the words as you read!

"Breaking Matthew" is the kind of book that once you start reading, you do not want to stop! Although it is the second book in a series, it stands on it's own. I am anxiously waiting to know more about Matthew and Ruby.

Warning - Depressing Cliffhanger!

This volume should come with a warning label: Depressing Cliffhanger! While the writing is vivid and certainly engages the reader, the content is, for me, too reminiscent of the horrors and reality of some of America's darkest hours of corruption and racial hatred, without redemption before the conclusion. The shining beauty of Ruby's faith and trust in Jesus is nearly lost amongst the relentless satanic actions of the majority of the characters, perhaps a mirror of the world today. The "unsettled" conclusion of this volume leaves me with the feelings I would have if the Bible were to leave us hanging with Joseph still in prison after Potifar's wife's betrayal or, worse, of Jesus still in the grave. Praise God! He did not leave the faithful hanging, and we have the sure hope of our redemption. Perhaps I could have a better "feel" for this volume if the next volume in the series were already available, but I am left with emptiness at the moment.

Risky Business!

I found this book to be fascinating! The secrecy and clandestine nature of the history of such a rare commodity as authentic ambergris is present to this very day. The author of this fine, small tome has grazed the edges of veiled threat by pursuing information about the places and people who hunt for beach-cast ambergris, and his inquiry into this cloistered `club' was met with the most emphatic ostracism and silence.

Since most people will never see or smell ambergris, or even care that it exists, it's not surprising that the subject has so little in-depth and reliable documentation. Do many people even know that it had value as a gourmet condiment throughout history, and was/is one of the gems of the perfume industry? Most mention of it seems to be anecdotal in nature. And because there is so much confusion about even identifying it, and obtaining even the smallest piece is a trial of some expense and trust, it really has fallen into the realm of myth, rather than reality.

Mr. Kemp, inflamed by a sensational local New Zealand newscast, tenaciously pursued a way to satisfy his own curiosity about this product of Sperm whale excrement, and this adventure, while undoubtedly intensely frustrating at times, is really worth reading about. He encounters many closed doors and is given the cold shoulder the majority of the time, but his sincerity was apparent to some, and they allowed him to step into the back room of museums and personal collections to analyze the properties that most of us would like to understand about ambergris, and he punctuates this with peoples subjective perceptions of how the different grades of it smell and feel.

I think this book was sorely needed and Mr. Kemp did a splendid job fleshing out some of the reality of the back-breaking and risky business of the ambergris trade. He does this with the perfect balance of empirical evidence and a sense of humor. BTW, where can I get a bottle of 'Eau de Christopher Kemp?

Unexpected gold

I have to admit that I expected Floating Gold by C Kemp to end up on my coffee table, quickly and mostly unread. Like any other book on natural history or marine biology, I expected a reference and catalogue of interesting pictures about a curious and often forgotten or misunderstood product of sperm whales. However, I began skimming the first chapter early one Saturday morning. A few hours later, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my original expectations were completely wrong. The book actually tells a story, and one I found difficult to put on the coffee table. Not only of Kemp's education and intense search for this curious byproduct of sperm-whale digestive problems, but also of people, misguided treaties and laws, history, greed and generosity. Kemp skillfully and simply covers the complex issues of molecular chemistry around the value of ambergris -- and it's role in the perfume industry. Even before I finished the book, I wanted to feel and smell this floating gold for myself... If you have any interest in natural history, marine biology or even an excellent narrative, Floating Gold will be an expected valuable read that will stimulate your curiosity and might make you search for the ambergris yourself.

A great read

This is a wonderful book that will save you many hundreds of hours of research if you are at all interested in Ambergris. It is also a very well done story which is quite fun to read. I use Ambergris in incense and perfumes that I make and was thrilled to finally find something that gives some great insight into the scientific as well as hunt for ambergris on the beaches. For a substance that is so sought after by some very influential luxury companies there has been very little published on the subject so this is a treat.

There's not much that's useful in this chapter. I feel bad even calling it a 'chapter,' to be honest. If this were a meal, this section wouldn't even be an appetizer. It would be like maybe some bread that's been sitting in the back that they bring out to everyone. But not really good bread with olive oil and stuff--just like hard, stale bread that you take one bite out of and then set down and then maybe give another chance later in the meal to soak up the sauce from your linguine because you think maybe you were too harsh on the bread earlier, but you realize it's even worse than you thought because you were really hungry when you sat down and it still tasted really shitty.

I guess I'm saying I'd probably just skip it if I were you.

If I had to choose my favorite fantasy sports author it would no doubt be Jonathan Bales. Everything he puts out is great and this book is no exception. I love that he always relies on statistics as the foundation for his research so you know that the methods he recommends are successful.

My favorite part in the book is learning about how the vegas lines impact each fantasy position and learning the win probabilities for certain player correlations i.e. how often do fantasy teams with a paired QB and RB have success etc. Keep up the great work.

A dramatic century in the Liri's socio-environmental history, with its cast of new industrial bourgeoisie, engineers and civil servants, illuminates how material developments and ideological currents completely reshaped the relationship between society and nature at the periphery of 19th century Europe. By integrating Political Economy into the narrative of European environmental history, this pioneering book offers a critical new view of discourses of water disorder and environmental politics in the Mediterranean region.

About the Author
Stefania Barca (born in Naples in 1968) is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. After obtaining her PhD in Economic History from the University of Bari (1997) she was a research associate with the Institute of Studies on Mediterranean Societies in Naples (part of the Italian National Research Council) and taught courses in economic, social and environmental history. She has published numerous articles in Italian and English and co-authored the book Storia dell'ambiente. Una introduzione ('An Introduction to Environmental History', 2004, with M. Armiero). In 2003 she was involved in founding the first Italian environmental history journal, I Frutti di Demetra. Bollettino di Storia e Ambiente, on whose editorial board she still serves. From 2005 to 2008 she was in the US, first as visiting scholar to the Program in Agrarian Studies at Yale University and then as Ciriacy Wantrup postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. She returned to Europe in 2009. Her current research projects include a comparative environmental history of petrochemicals, and a biography of Italian leading ecologist Laura Conti.
