Comic Books and American Cultural History: An AnthologyFrom Bloomsbury Academic

Comic Books and American Cultural History is an anthology that examines the ways in which comic books can be used to understand the history of the United States. Over the last twenty years, there has been a proliferation of book-length works focusing on the history of comic books, but few have investigated how comics can be used as sources for doing American cultural history.

These original essays illustrate ways in which comic books can be used as resources for scholars and teachers. Part 1 of the book examines comics and graphic novels that demonstrate the techniques of cultural history; the essays in Part 2 use comics and graphic novels as cultural artifacts; the third part of the book studies the concept of historical identity through the 20th century; and the final section focuses on different treatments of contemporary American history. Discussing topics that range from romance comics and Superman to American Flagg! and Ex Machina, this is a vivid collection that will be useful to anyone studying comic books or teaching American history.

Useful but Uneven
By Russ Burgos
Part of the growing academic literature on comic books, I enjoyed this edited volume though, like all edited volumes, my enjoyment varied with the topics of each contribution. Since my own interests lie in the intersection of politics and cultural globalization, I was impressed by Martin Lund's contribution on Superman as a Golem, on John Donovan's reading of the anti-Communist "Fighting American" series, and Peter Lee's chapter on the early-1970s kung fu craze. That being said, at the end of the day this is still an academic, rather than popular, piece of non-fiction, and as a result several of the contributions tend to get bogged down in theoretical discussions that will leave non-academic readers frustrated. In addition, several of the chapters require a fairly high degree of intimacy with specific characters or series in order to take much away from them. Indeed, one of the weaknesses of several chapters, especially Donovan's, is the linearity of the arguments; long digressions on which artist inked whose pencils, for example, don't offer me much value. As an educator, the most valuable contributions in the book were Jessamyn Neuhaus's and Bridget M. Marshall's chapters on using comic books as classroom resources.

The open source movement is a worldwide effort to promote an open style of software development more aligned with the accepted intellectual style of science than the proprietary modes of invention that have been characteristic of modern business. The idea is to keep the scientific advances created by software development openly available for everyone to use, understand, and improve. The very process of open source creation is highly transparent. This book addresses prominent projects in the open source movement, along with its enabling technologies, social characteristics, legal issues, business venues, and public and educational roles.

Excellent & Clear
By Teadrinker
"Open Source" may seem mysterious to the majority of us - most open source projects are for internet infrastructure and used by systems administrators (those geeks in the back room) - but open source has been the well from which much of our growing knowledge has sprung. It is people working together, often for free, who have made the internet what it is today.

The first question people often ask is, why would anybody work on something for free? The Apache Server code, for instance, had 80,000 lines of code with about 400 people contributing. The answer is the spirit of intellectual inquiry, of doing something valuable and knowing you are doing something valuable, but it's also a game. Open source software developers are playing the best computer game of all - how to change the world.

One of the strengths of this book is that it summarizes the majority of the research on the history of open source to date. All along, people have been documenting the history of Apache Servers, Mosaic, Netscape, Windows, HTML, JavaScript, Sendmail, MySQL, etc. There is primary documentation from the developers themselves on listservs, mailing lists and other online forums. There is a lot of secondary material as well, sometimes by developers but also by scholars, historians and critics. Most of this material is summarized here.

The ongoing controversy about open source projects - are they good or bad? are they safe or dangerous? - is basically null. Most open source projects are dual-license anyway (that means a version is free and another version, with technical support, costs money). Open source software is generally more robust because, "given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow." If you don't know what that means, I'll translate (I was a technical writer in the computer industry): if enough people try to solve a problem, it will be solved much faster. That seems logical and it is. This is why Firefox has become popular despite Microsoft's near-monopoly with Internet Explorer.

There are many interesting details in this book, but I will discuss only one: the ability to "View Source" code for HTML web pages that first appeared in the Mosaic browser in 1995. Mosaic was the first "killer app," a computer application that soared into widespread use. The "View Source" function itself led to the exponential expansion of the internet because, suddenly, non-programmers like myself could copy the code from any page, alter it, and post a new website. When knowledge is shared it catches fire.

Overall, it is clearly written about a complex subject and will appeal to anyone that lives and works with computers and the internet.

A 30,000' view of open source technology and policy
By Joseph Chimento
This book is an excellent overview of open source technology and policy. The author did a great job of creating a timeline of opensource technology which captures everything from kernel to application. This book would make a great addition to your library if you are a CIO looking to understand Open Source technology and policy.

Vitamin D: New Perspectives in Drawing, by Emma Dexter

Drawing has recently experienced a renewal of importance in the art world; in fact, it has rarely been as widely represented in the biennials, art fairs, and exhibitions as it is now. Similar in concept, scope and structure to Phaidon's successful volume Vitamin P, Vitamin D presents, in A to Z order, the work of 109 artists who have emerged internationally since 1990 using the medium of drawing. Whether representational or abstract, small or large in scale, using only one line or rich in colors and pattern, drawings have a highly descriptive and meticulously detailed quality that is being explored by an increasing number of contemporary artists. Extending beyond the traditional image associated with this medium, Vitamin D hopes to illustrate the complexity, variety, and relevance of the practice of drawing today.

Another must have Phaidon book.
By clifford
This is a book that when you first open it up and flip through a couple of pages you will be saying to yourself that you have to sit down with it for a long considered look. Myself, I just looked at the care that Phaidon press took while publishing this, from its rough artistic pages to the in-depth look at contemporary drawing and knew instantly that this was a survey book that I would be opening time and again for years to come.

The artists that are covered here are not neccisarily unknown. Pettibon, Peyton, and other long standing luminaries stand along side scores of other artists that I had never heard of. What it is, is a survey of non-illustration/often conceptualy based drawing that is occuring today be the artist known or obscure.

If you are into drawing, this is a must have book. One thing to keep in mind is that the format presented here is pretty much along the lines of Vitamin P and the three 'Cream' books. I think all four of these ranged from good to great, if you disagree with this sentiment, you might not like 'Vitamin D.'

On reproductions
By ~L
Vitamin D is an outstanding publication of drawings from contemporary artists which shows great depth in both subjectivity and theme, the one overwhelming issue seems to be the quality of the reproductions within. Context gives us the reason for this.. in that these are works by CONTEMPORARY artists and as such have not been digitized as throughly as say the often if not OVER reproduced imagery of Leonardo or Michelangelo, so yes some of the reproductions are less stunning however they are more than adequate and what is more important, they are reproduced well enough to spark interest in seeing the original. Artwork can never truly be reproduced, you must experience the original to truly appreciate the pieces. However Vitamin D does what it was designed to, as did it's predecessor Vitamin P, giving a contemporary overview of works and the artists who create them which have yet to be studied. These books are history in the making and that alone gives them more merit than most art publications. This series is more than worth owning and will prove to be volumes you will return to again and again.

Refreshing contents but poor quality reproductions!
By Jan Vanden Berghe
As an art teacher, artist and scholar I buyed the book for it's very interesting overview of contemporary drawing, a fiew of the artists I already knew. Maybe because of the thick matte paper used in printing, a lot of the drawings loose their sharpness and overall colourfulness and clarity. In comparing reproductions in other publications (e.g. "Drawings" Michaël Borremans, edit. Walther König, Köln) one can only ascertain that the loss of quality is in fact unacceptable for such an ambitious publication like "Vitamin D". Moreover the bigger part of the art works are printed in a too small size for allowing a good viewing.

Good stuff but not What I expected, More for the Marathoner
By Daniel Hurley
I enjoyed "Galloway's Book on Running", and that is the better book, if you are going to purchase one of his. This book fell short from what I expected. What I was expecting was a book that addressed year round training from a physiology stand point, when to ease up and focus training to build toward those goal races, those favorites' races where you want to perform at your best. Along with that, inclusion of how to maintain reasonable fitness during recovery, non-injury periods would have been helpful. So many great races are offered all year round, a constructive guide on peaking, how much time to scale back for physical recovery and retooling, types of recommended workouts for that maintenance period was what I was hoping for. Lots of great nuggets on the side that are always useful such as vitamins, GPS, heart monitors etc. The training plans are also designed for marathoners and I was also hoping for 5K, 10K and half training references as well. The book is also written more for the entry level runner. Go with "Galloway's Book on Running", much of the same information is contained with a broader appeal.

A little lite in the details
By P. Mooter
I am getting ready to attempt to qualify for the Boston Marathon so I was looking for a book with lots of details, and this one is a little lite on that. It's a FAST read, mainly because of all the pictures, so for me it seems a little "fluffy" and needs more details. Probably not a bad book to start with if you're looking into the Jeff Galloway method of running (which I am 100% sold on when it comes to long distances or even just getting started. You can read more about my 1st Ultra using Jeff's program [...])
For more detail info get Jeff's "Marathon, You can do it" book.

A good book for All Types of Runners
By codegeek
This book is good for someone that is looking for a plan. It has three different levels, A, B, and C, depending on what your goals are. If you just want to run (x) number of miles a week, then search the internet for plans that do just that. What I like about this book is that it offers advice on steadily improving both your running technique and distance. It has guidance on drills and tempo work, as well as advice on how to recognize and treat injuries. What I didn't like about the book was the fact that the A plan only exercised three days a week, and the B plan exercised four, but the mileage was too aggressive. Using my own intelligence, I am using a hybrid of the two. But that in no detracts from the usefulness of the book for a new runner like me.

As Good As It Gets
By Jeff Cheatham
This is pretty much as good as leather braiding instruction books get for people who want to make authentic, impressive, usable things, right now.

It describes and illustrates how to braid a range of items, plainly and clearly. The content is wider than it is deep (Grant later produced an encyclopedia that is exhaustive), but the items chosen are core items in the craft: belts, straps, handles, grips, decorative thongs, more.

Most items shown in the book you might see anyplace today, not common or rare, but probably admired. At least one item is from Conquistidor days, and is now seldom seen anyplace at all: you might have to go to a museum to see an original. The braid itself is simple and effective enough that it's a puzzle how it became rare. In this way, for tidbits of this sort, it is a neat book.

The illustrations are usual quality for 1940's craft articles, which is how the content was first published. This can surprise a modern eye, one used to the present efforts to make books buyer-attractive. But this too is authentic. Writing and content are fine, practical and direct. However, there is no hint of "tricking the process," as is sometimes seen now in instructions on how to do things. Mr. Grant goes straight to the method that a cowboy or outdoorsman, or the Lady of a working farm or ranch, might use to produce things better than, more beautiful than, or more suitable for use than what they could buy.

There is a low tool count, and a short materials list. Plain instructions for making or improvising tools unique to braiding and making leather lace are given. There is no cure, of course, for the acute shortage of cows and their hides seen now in the typical city, as compared to the mid-19th-century Texas Mr. Grant grew up in.

For a person who needed one braided item today, say to complement a basket or a box purse, or some themed item for a Western or outdoorsy room, and who also wanted to be able to say "I did that," this book is a good choice.

It is also a good choice for people who like books, on any subject, that won't sing or dance but which carry a full load of reliable information on their subject matter, and which are good either to give or to keep. Any copy of "Leather Braiding" that lasts long enough will find a friend.

Good Inexpensive Alternative
By Atalanta
Bought this at a Tandy store many years ago and had to replace it recently (made the "mistake" of loaning it out). I bought this instead of Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding. by Bruce Grant. While the other book may be good, the price tag made me balk and not being able to actually flip through it first made me wonder about if it was worth the money.

This was well worth it. I was able to take the techniques and use them to make a flail using both suede lace and plastic lace. The instructions are clear and concise. Instructions are given for many different projects.

If you do leatherwork, this is a good addition to your collection!
