Fundamental Seduction: The Jack Hyles Case, by Voyle A. Glover

This book came out in 1990 and was instantly denounced and banned. Hundreds of Independent Fundamental Baptists stood in their pulpits and denounced the author from the pulpit as being a "tool of Satan." The author received death threats and was denounced from the pulpit of First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana and other pulpits in the land of Independent Fundamental Baptists. The author, an attorney and former member of the First Baptist Church, details fact after fact, including: The possible homicide of a 17 month old baby. The chief suspect? The son of a famous Baptist Preacher. This child was found to have multiple broken bones in various stages of healing prior to his death while in the home of this man, David Hyles (who would take the Fifth in the Coroner's Inquest). Multiple adulterous affairs by this son (who wrote a book entitled "Purity" while he was having some of the affairs). Pornographic pictures discovered in a briefcase tossed into a dumpster behind the church by David Hyles. The subjects? The wives of men in the church and other women in the church. The facts showing how a famous Independent Fundamental Baptist preacher sent his son to an unsuspecting church, when that preacher knew his son had serious moral failures. A pastor who brags that he has men on his staff that would commit suicide if he asked them. A church membership that displays a loyalty eerily reminiscent of the Jim Jones cult mindset. Staff members who boast that their pastor is so god-like that he does not have a dishonest drop of blood in his body. A daughter who reveals conversations she overhead between her mother, a secretary to this Baptist pastor, and the pastor, which always ended with a soft, whispered "I love you," all the while her father, a deacon of the church and close friend to the pastor, was banished to the basement by her mother. The daughter of this famous Baptist pastor who says her father's church was a cult. These are just a few of the facts in this book. The author, Voyle Glover, a lawyer and a former church member for nearly 20 years, brings all the passion of a lawyer doing closing argument to the case as he relentlessly brings out fact after fact and question after question, each of which begs to be answered. At one point, Glover examines sworn testimony given by Hyles and his alleged paramour during a deposition taken during her divorce. Testimony there revealed that the Reverend Jack Hyles had given or loaned more than $100,000 to this woman, and bought her a new car every two years. Interest in this case has attracted attention from various media sources, including the Chicago Tribune, The Times, the television show Current Affair, the Southern Baptist Conference, newspapers across the nation, radio, magazines and a host of religious publications. The book has been out of print for over 2 decades. Now, there is a demand for the book by a new generation, the children of the parents who refused to read this "trash" (as Hyles called it). This generation wants to know what their parents refused to see. They want truth. There is an even greater interest now, in light of the recent scandal brought on by the headline news that the successor pastor to the Hyles pulpit, the son-in-law, Jack Schaap, was recently (2012) arrested for transporting a minor across state lines to have sex. He pled guilty and faces a minimum of 10 years prison.

From the Author
I wrote this book in 1990. At the time, I'd just left a church I'd belonged to for nearly 20 years.  The book was about the pastor of the church, a rather famous man in the world of Independent Fundamental Baptists.

The book raised questions that should not have even existed. As a result of writing the book, I received death threats, hate mail, and since the majority of my clients were members of the church where this man was pastor, most of my client base disappeared overnight.

Since that time, the pastor has passed on, to heaven according to some, and elsewhere according to others. I leave it others to speculate on that, though I lean towards believing he's been up there with God doing some explaining, and maybe answering some of those questions I raised.

In many ways, he was a good man. There was a lot to like about the man. I liked him on a personal level. He was a man's man, and very personable, very charismatic (not in the religious sense). He had a lot of wisdom. I admit to being helped by his wisdom a number of times. And, I believe he was a generous man.

That said, there was much he did and said that was wrong. Very wrong. The book addresses some of those wrongs.

Getting a copy of this book is rather problematic. The book is out of print, so any copy you purchase is going to be used. There are no intentions at this point of reprinting the book. If ever I do, I'd have to make it an abridged version because frankly, the book was too harsh in some places. As a Christian, I am admonished to speak the truth...in love. I have no problem with the first part, but admit I failed in some parts to maintain the second part. Part of the reason, I believe, was the anger, the deep feeling of betrayal I felt.  I no longer have those feelings. Time has a way of healing wounds. And, if I were writing the book today, it would be more matter-of-fact, and some parts would be omitted.

An Opening of the Eyes
By Caron McCracken
I read this book several years ago because even as a graduate of Hyles-Anderson, I was not afraid to investigate for myself. The author was very responsible in his presentation of the facts. I had sat under much of the preaching that the author had evaluated - his analysis was fair and accurate. Its hard to recognize hard facts when you fall under the influence of a man as strong a manipulator as Dr. Hyles was, but realizing the truth is so freeing. I highly recomend this book to those who have attended this college and are ready to make Jesus Christ the sole satisfier of your soul, not an icon. Dr. Hyles called my husband and myself the greatest alumni (financial gifts)supporters (at that time) of his church. So its not like we have ever been out to harm Pastor Hyles in any way.

A Must Read if you Dare Get the Whole Story
By Dan
Attorney Voyle Glover systematically dismantles the facade surrounding the late Jack Hyles in this expose filled with first-hand testimony, evidence and observations. Glover makes a most-convincing case that something was amiss in the life and ministry of this 20th century icon of one of the most extreme branches of Christian fundamentalism. Using court documents, personal interviews and the language of an accomplished attorney, some readers will react strongly in the negative as they see the reality beyond the illusion that was Jack Hyles. While many will point to Hyles' ministry having made a positive impact on them and others, the honest reader will reach a conclusion that these good works were in spite of his character and theology, not because of them. This book requires an open mind when reading and when completed, you'll be left saddened, maddened and heart-broken for those left in the wake of this sadly misguided so-called spiritual leader.

Worth reading, but not well-written
By Tara Lohman
This is a book worth reading, especially for those who still believe to this day that Jack Hyles was a man of God, rather than the truth, which was that at some point his pride led him down the road to creating a cult that has been responsible for an unbelievable amount of abuse and damage to the lives of others. Voyle Glover was there for the glory days of First Baptist Church of Hammond and so was ideally placed to see the abuses perpetuated by Hyles, his son, and so many of those who have followed the rules and regulations of this type of church. They are responsible for the encouragement of an easy, repeat-after-me type of "salvation" that is mostly for the purpose of claiming inflated numbers of members while leaving the "convert" with no idea of what he's done, or even worse, the idea that he is just fine and "Heaven-bound" because he prayed some prayer after a desperate college student needing to claim the numbers.

Now that Jack Schaap, the son-in-law of Hyles, has fallen into disgrace, a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon and trying to profit from the entire mess, writing books and articles and naming names, but Glover did it years ago, when it was new and shocking to many people and when it would hurt his business and his friendships. He bravely stepped forward to expose what he knew, and he paid the price. I don't know Glover personally, but know many who know him, and I believe he's a decent man, one with integrity. He's almost too kind to Hyles, cutting him some slack in many cases, when I believe the plain truth is that pride destroyed the man and he created a system just rotten to the core. I only attended the church's schools for a couple of years, but had family very involved in the church, and the average person cannot imagine that corruption of this system and so many other churches spawned from it.

All that being said, the book itself is a disappointment. I read it years ago when it first came out, and it's basically the same as it was, not all that much has been added. Glover is a very intelligent man and gives a good spoken interview. I am sure that in his law dealings he is very skilled. But he considers himself a writer and I'm afraid I disagree with him on that. The man so sorely needs an editor, or at least some sort of beta-reader who is not closely involved with the subject matter and isn't afraid to say, "Mr. Glover, you just said the exact same thing in this paragraph that you said in the paragraph before it." He spends the first 10% of the book telling you what he is going to say, laying out the facts while continuing to say, "I'll be telling you this," and "I'll be telling you that...." Then he does---over and over and over, repeating the facts, re-quoting what he already quoted from Hyles' sermons. He is so redundant that he could have said everything he said in a third of the book and used the rest to fill it with new information and new stories of abuses in the church---God knows there are plenty. He continually has little asides that come across as unprofessional, and gives examples that had me shaking my head and saying, "Huh?" The chapter on Brent Stephens was heartbreaking, but when he goes into the story from Brent's point of view, it's hokey and corny and made me think of John Edwards assuming the voice of the failing fetus in his million-dollar personal injury lawsuits. I much preferred the straightforward words of the investigator over Glover's overly dramatic written histrionics, sad and frustrating as the case is. So I have to say that I cannot really recommend this book as a well-written piece of work, but that does not change the basic truths that exist---Hyles was a phony who did untold damage to untold numbers of people, and unfortunately, he is still fooling people, many of them good people, long after his death.

A Singularly Unfeminine Profession: One Woman's Journey in Physics, by Mary K Gaillard

In 1981 Mary K Gaillard became the first woman on the physics faculty at the University of California at Berkeley. Her career as a theoretical physicist spanned the period from the inception in the late 1960s and early 1970s of what is now known as the Standard Model of particle physics and its experimental confirmation, culminating with the discovery of the Higgs particle in 2012. A Singularly Unfeminine Profession recounts Gaillard's experiences as a woman in a very male-dominated field, while tracing the development of the Standard Model as she witnessed it and participated in it. The generally nurturing environment of her childhood and college years, as well as experiences as an undergraduate in particle physics laboratories and as a graduate student at Columbia University which cemented her passion for particle physics left her unprepared for the difficulties that she confronted as a second year graduate student in Paris, and later at CERN, another particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. The development of the Standard Model, as well as attempts to go beyond it and aspects of early universe physics, are described through the lens of Gaillard's own work, in a language written for a lay audience.

Bemused
By Herbert Gintis
I do not know why Gaillard wrote this book, and I do not know why I read it (with pleasure). I guess the author wanted to stress the difficulties of breaking into an all-male enclave. I guess I wanted to learn something about the emergence of the Standard Model. I liked the book, although I may be biased by the fact that I am an academic, and the book is an odyssey of academic schmoozing.
I certainly did not have to be told about the male domination of academia forty years ago. In all my years as an undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania and the Sorbonne, and my graduate training in economics at Harvard, I never had a female instructor. The only books I read by women were in economic history and development economics. When I was a first-year Assistant Professor at Harvard, I received a letter inviting my wife to join the Harvard Wives Club. Needless to say, there was no Harvard Husbands club.
Gaillard (which means "hardy" in French) spends lots of time on her personal life, which is okay with me. She also talks a lot about faculty politics and how she was mistreated. Okay. But I don't know an academic who couldn't relate with relish stories of being mistreated. Really boring. Who cares?
I recommend this book because it found it fun reading, I did learn some history of science, and Gaillard is a pleasant writer with a sunny disposition.

A Dose of Modern Physics and Perserverence
By D. Veenendaal
Some modern atomic physics knowledge is helpful. I found the history of standard model physics presented at about the right physics level for me, a former high physics and chemistry teacher. The thread of chauvinism Gaillard presents throughout the book is enlightening, but also disturbing.

Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens, by Susan A. Clancy

They are tiny. They are tall. They are gray. They are green. They survey our world with enormous glowing eyes. To conduct their shocking experiments, they creep in at night to carry humans off to their spaceships. Yet there is no evidence that they exist at all. So how could anyone believe he or she was abducted by aliens? Or want to believe it?

To answer these questions, psychologist Susan Clancy interviewed and evaluated "abductees"--old and young, male and female, religious and agnostic. She listened closely to their stories--how they struggled to explain something strange in their remembered experience, how abduction seemed plausible, and how, having suspected abduction, they began to recollect it, aided by suggestion and hypnosis.

Clancy argues that abductees are sane and intelligent people who have unwittingly created vivid false memories from a toxic mix of nightmares, culturally available texts (abduction reports began only after stories of extraterrestrials appeared in films and on TV), and a powerful drive for meaning that science is unable to satisfy. For them, otherworldly terror can become a transforming, even inspiring experience. "Being abducted," writes Clancy, "may be a baptism in the new religion of this millennium." This book is not only a subtle exploration of the workings of memory, but a sensitive inquiry into the nature of belief.

From Publishers Weekly
If you're going to read just one book about alien abductions, make it this one. And if you think alien abduction stories aren't worth considering seriously, Clancy will convince you otherwise. A postdoctoral fellow in psychology at Harvard, she follows the dictum of William James to "take 'weird beliefs' seriously but not literally." Thus, she considers that the belief that one has been abducted by little gray beings with large, black catlike eyes, subjected to intrusive and painful physical examinations and exploited to create hybrid human/alien babies serves the deep human need to find meaning in one's life. She presents clear explorations of what most mainstream experts believe are the sources of the abduction story, such as sleep paralysis and the dubious use of hypnosis in "recovering" forgotten memories of the abduction. Her more original contribution, based on her own research, is that abductees score high on measures of schizotypy (they're far from schizophrenic, but are prone to fantasy and "magical" thinking) and, more speculatively, experiencing what in the 19th century was called hysteria. Writing in a nonacademic and witty style, Clancy offers an intelligent and compassionate look at people whose "weird" belief usually elicits derision, and argues convincingly for the need to look deeper into its significance. From Scientific American
One dark night in 1961 an event occurred that opened a new chapter in paranormal psychology: two Americans were, they later claimed, abducted by aliens. Similar claims have been coming ever since. Susan A. Clancy, a Harvard psychologist who describes herself as "a reluctant scholar of alienology," has investigated many of them and written this short, insightful and often funny description of abductees and the psychology behind their experiences. Clancy is never condescending toward the 50 subjects she interviewed; she simply asks questions, listens and then presents her own carefully reasoned explanation for why they might believe they were abducted. Fortunately, Clancy is well equipped to understand strange events. She has not only studied hypnosis but experienced it and the false memories it can "recover." She has also awoken to the terror of "sleep paralysis," an unusual state in which an individual perceives senses as if she is awake but is unable to move because parts of the brain are still asleep; hallucinations are common. Clancy believes this phenomenon, which typically lasts about a minute, is behind most of her subjects’ narratives. Many share the same basic storyline: the person awakens in the dark with aliens moving around her and is transported to a spaceship, where she is subject to medical or sexual experiments. Abductees may be able to recall every detail or instead only "know" that it happened. In quests to make sense of the traumatic experience, they usually read up on abductions and seek therapists who will help them recover and understand their memories of the event—often through hypnosis. Frequently they associate with fellow abductees, either in person or online. Clancy gained access to this faith-based community in the simplest possible way: she put an ad in the newspaper asking, "Have you been abducted by aliens?" She interviewed her subjects at length and gave those who volunteered various tests to reveal any mental health problems (only one person qualified) and how susceptible they were to false memories. The book explains how individuals can have memories of events that never occurred and describes the types of people who are more likely to become believers. In a nutshell, they are fantasy-prone and are often unhappy and trying to make sense of their lives. The abduction provides a touchstone. At the very end, and with obvious reluctance, Clancy concludes that abduction beliefs provide "the same things that millions of people the world over derive from their religions: meaning, reassurance, mystical revelation, spirituality, transformation."

Jonathan Beard

From Booklist
In conducting lab tests to find out if people with recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse were more prone than others to create false memories about things that never happened to them, Harvard psychologist Clancy was accused of being insensitive to abuse victims. So she turned to another group of people whose traumatic memories she was certain could not be real--people who remember being abducted by aliens. In this informal and entertaining report on her research, Clancy shows that the group of abductees she studied in 2002 were more likely to create false memories in the lab and scored high on measures of fantasy--proneness and schizotypy (personality characteristics that include perceptual aberrations and magical thinking). Despite these traits, with one or two exceptions her subjects were what society classifies as normal. She speculates that an abduction memory, though horrific, is ultimately a religious experience that incorporates contact with a higher power, a convenient narrative that provides an explanation for odd personal episodes, and a transformative event that offers a meaning for human existence. Loved it
By Susan Gerbic
Through out this book I kept thinking "this part, this is what I want to read aloud to someone" then a page later I would say, "no this part I want to tell someone about" And on and on throughout the entire book. I wanted to share what I was learning to lots of people. So here I am now writing a review and all I can say is I really loved it, learned a lot and recommend this to anyone who wants to understand why people believe in things when there is no evidence to do so.

Objective reality
By le from Ohio
This book is well written academically and otherwise. My problem is her premise. She flatly doesn't believe in alien abduction and she is out to prove to herself and everyone else that it isn't possible 100% of the time. It's all in the mind. She didn't convince me, but I respect her work and her beliefs, and am glad that I had the chance to read it. Pragmatism has its place.

The Science of Alien Abductions
By Rob Hardy
In the past few decades (and significantly, not before that time) there have been stories from people who have been abducted by aliens, probed, sampled, and disgorged back to try to figure out what happened. There have been those who have taken these stories at face value, most famously the late Harvard psychiatrist John Mack, who said that there was no evidence that such abductees were telling anything but the truth. Skeptics and most of his fellow academics scoffed. Now Susan Clancy, a Harvard psychologist, has written about her own researches into participants in the phenomenon. _Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens_ (Harvard University Press) explains such abductions in a way that skeptics will appreciate. However, Clancy also shows respect for the abductees she investigated, appreciating their viewpoints and explaining without condescension how such ideas came to be. The book will convert few abductees from their belief system (and Clancy shows why such a belief system is so satisfying and firmly held), but it goes far to show that they are not stupid or psychotic and they are not just seeking publicity.

As far as the physical reality of such abductions, Clancy (unlike Mack) is firmly in the skeptics' corner, and gives reasons to be sure that no such events are happening, and if they are happening, extraordinary evidence is needed make the events credible; no one has come close to producing such evidence. But she points out, the proper scientific response is not, "Why investigate abduction since it is not really happening?" but rather "What sort of people are reporting being abducted, and why?" And it was this she set out to do; after she got approved by Harvard's Institutional Review Board to do the research, she started running newspaper ads: "Have you been abducted by aliens?", and giving a number which abductees could call. She describes the fifty subjects as "generally warm, open, trusting, and friendly"; they liked fantasy, tarot, and astrology. But there are plenty of people who have such characteristics. Why do some become convinced they have actually been abducted? The startling answer is that they have first hand experiences of abduction that registered in their minds as surely as last night's dinner registered in yours. In the abductees' cases, the memories seem to come from sleep paralysis, a limbo state between sleeping and waking that is not at all uncommon. Before flying saucer films, there was sleep paralysis, and those suffering from it reported interacting with Satan, witches, or dragons; nowadays, it's extraterrestrials.

But why would someone want to foster memories that are so obviously painful? "The contact these people have had with aliens doesn't just feel real - it feels transformative." The abductees reported that their abductions were the most traumatic experiences in their lives, but also the most positive. They felt changed, improved, more at peace, more at one with the universe as they experienced it. All of them denied they would choose not to be abducted, if they could go back again. In a provocative final section, Clancy demonstrates that Saint Teresa's account of her encounter with an angel is very close to accounts abductees give of their own encounters. She shows that abductees get the same benefits of meaning, reassurance, and spirituality that believers in ordinary religions do. _Abducted_ is a small book, a wonderful primer for those who have never had the abduction experience themselves but are interested in the often strange inner experiences of their fellow humans. Clancy writes with wit and with genuine sympathy and understanding of her subjects, and readers will find them far less strange than they had initially seemed.
