On the other hand, accelerator developments and improvements as well as commissioning of new machines by specialists require more complex measu- ments than those for routine machine operation. A modern beam diagnostic system, including the software tools, has to cover these demands, too. Therefore, this book should motivate physicists, constructors, electronic engineers, and computer experts to work together during the design and daily use of a beam diagnostic system. This book aims to give them ideas and tools for their work. I would not have been able to write this book without a good education in physics and many discussions with competent leaders, mentors, and c- leagues. After working about 40 years in teams on accelerators, there are so many people I have to thank that it is impossible to mention them all by name here.

Frighteningly bad

First story: Forbidden Princess
OK. Our Heroine is kidnapped in her wedding dress, on her way to marry royalty. She's swapped out, and a look-alike takes her place on the walk to the cathedral. While being brutally dragged through the woods by an unknown kidnapper, Heroine apparently succumbs to Stockholm Syndrome on Speed Dial, because all she can think is "OMG. This guy is HOT." Meanwhile, back at the cathedral, no one notices that the wrong bride is walking down the aisle. Not even when her veil is lifted for the kiss. Not even later that night when the marriage is being consummated. Back at the hideout, Heroine and Kidnapper have to sleep together in the same bed because that's the only way he can make sure she won't escape. Apparently he's never heard of deadbolts or window locks. Spoiler Alert: The Kidnapper and the Heroine Fall In Love!

Being dutiful, and so I can write a fair review, I somehow manage to go on to the next story: The Prince's Mistress.
The Prince of whatever-the-heck-the-place-is turns out to be the brother of the Kidnapper in the first story! He falls in love with the sister of the guy he just HATED when he was at Harvard! She has a scandalous past! The prince, being a dumb bunny, doesn't know who her brother is! He wants to marry her! She says, "Nooo Noooo you can't marry me! I have a scandalous past!" He says, "Hey babe, you are soooo hot, you can have one of the crown jewels to wear on your ring finger." Whoa! Suddenly she realizes they are engaged! But....he's up to no good, for little does she know that he is involved in an evil plot that forces him to marry her! Just like what happened with Prince Albert and poor Charlene. How romantic.

Third story: The Royal Wedding Night.
This story explains why the royal bridegroom in the first story apparently didn't notice that he was consummating his marriage with someone other than his intended bride. Sorry.... My brain cells threatened to commit mass suicide unless I deleted this mess from my Kindle immediately. So I did.

I really wanted to like this, but...

I really wanted to like this book. I had read some blog posts by the author which I found intriguing and they lead me to the book. Then all the five star reviews here convinced me to buy the book. Sadly, that's where the party ended.

Even though it is a relatively short book it's probably five times longer than it needs to be. It does start out on a high note, though, which is why I give it two stars.

The author begins by explaining that we communicate with and create the future by putting down ideas (a vision of how the future can be) today and that, with time, certain ideas will gain support, be built upon and eventually turn into reality. (Looking at the old Star Trek episodes we can see examples of this.) The visionary uses "attractors" to help clarify the vision and let people latch onto it. The vision-attractor duo gets the ball on the future rolling today and help it to build steam and become a future reality. This was interesting. And this takes us through chapter 3, which is where I would stop were I reading it again. (And I'd cut out over half of what's in these first three chapters.)

The book is begging to be structured better. (And it aches from grammar mistakes!)

The author should use the first chapter to lay out the framework (such that it is) that the rest of the book will then fill in. It was confusing because the author did not apply his own framework to his predictions in a systematic way. Instead, he bounces between explaining his framework and telling us his version of the future. This causes him to do a poor job of both explaining how he thinks about the future and what he thinks about it.

Along the way there are side trips that drone on about drones, drop us into a hole of holes and introduce us to the future free-lance worker-explorer, the Terabyter, who is likely loosely affiliated with a work colony.

How about incorporating some economic theory (or any theory) as a guide to seeing the future?

I really did want to like this.

This book is full of unique and interesting ideas on how to shape your own destiny. The author uses interesting personal experience and insight to offer ways you can create a future of your own design. It is a fun read and a useful tool for today's (and tomorrow's) business world.

The Future is Coming, The Future is Coming

Review by Steve Baker - Tom Frey has written a very interesting and thought-provoking way to examine how to direct the future. As Tom writes, "Our vision of the future creates our actions today." He explains how we can create attractors to the future in an easy to follow guide. The book is easy to read and at the same time you will find yourself reading a section, contemplating the ideas, re-reading and then having some AHA moments. Communicating With The Future is an important book for planning in business and in our personal lives. As one of the top-rated futurists in the world, Tom is a highly intelligent deep thinker but he is also down to earth with a good sense of humor that shines through in his writing. I think this book should become a college course for future leaders.

Bedtime reading for engineers

This is a newer addition to older versions with the same excellent quality. For engineers who are learning digital signal processing, this is an excellent book but a little heavy on the math and statistics. Many engineers are buying FFT analyzers without knowing how to use them and the limitations placed upon measurements. This is great reading to understand the theory.

Strongly recommend it but I am not sure that it is bed time reading.

He teaches what I believe is still the only course on airline management at any college in the nation and is highly respected for his work.
In this volume, he focuses specifically on the problems of risk and insurance as it applies to the airline industry. Although the book is relatively new, published in 2000, given the events in the industry in the past few years it may already be ripe for a revision. Regardless, the text provides a broad, yet concise, understanding of insurance and risk management as it applies to the aviation industry, both commerical and otherwise.
This book should be required reading for anyone considering a career in aviation management or working in the insurance industry with airlines.

A wonderful trip down memory lane for us baby boomers!!! Forty years ago there was still such innocence. For those born later, a peek into how their parents may have lived and played.
