I recommend this book to anyone starting out in astrology and in particular, wanting to learn more about the Capricorn star sign. This is easy and light-hearted reading. I enjoyed Mary's personal touches to the entire book, through conversations she had with clients and friends. Having read all about Capricorn in these pages, and coming from a family clustered with them and Saturn a dominant family motif, I so enjoyed Mary English's approach. This book is terrific, it is about people, real people! Stories about individual Capricorn's, their relationships, and the uniqueness each person expresses within the primordial archetype that Kronos/Capricorn demands. From the Author
Why the title of this book?
After the publication of How to Survive a Pisces, I was asked by my clients if I was going to write about their sign, so I embarked on writing about each sign of the Zodiac. As I'd started
with my own sign, Pisces, the last sign, I thought I'd go backwards
through the Zodiac. Why not?
And as I'd promised myself to go backwards, it then meant I had to write about Capricorn after Aquarius.
This wasn't an easy option.
Even though I have a sister who is Capricorn, a dear Homeopathic friend (whose husband is also Capricorn) and two second cousins, the more I thought about, or read about Capricorns, the more it seemed it would be an uphill struggle. I then had to think of a title, one that would inspire others to learn about this sign, but also to help those that struggle with the sign themselves. I wasn't going to write just about the fun side of the sign; I needed to write about their Achilles heel. The thing that other people think they struggle with, which I found is 'being happy'.
And to make the writing of this book more meaningful, just as I got to the last chapter and was 'tidying-things-up', I suffered an unexpected and humungous computer crash which effectively wiped-away 50% of this book... and turned it into hieroglyphics. No amount of software fixes would recreate 4 months of work and over 12,000 words and I was left with the sorry task of having to rewrite the last 3 chapters. The only people who truly knew how I felt were other authors, of which my older sister Lucy is one, and after spending the weekend weeping and cursing Jupiter and Uranus retrograde, her sympathetic ear and reminder to 'back-up EVERYWHERE' brought me some solace and I carried on... even though I felt very UN-happy.
It was during this sad episode that I realised I had to call upon my own Saturn (which you will learn about soon) which is luckily in Capricorn, so I could: 'grit teeth, nose to the grindstone, no use making a fuss, get on with it', otherwise you wouldn't be reading this book at all. It also gave me some understanding of Capricorn's need to succeed, and get the job done regardless.

Relevant, practical & meaningful tips

I read this book in one sitting. (I have ADD and this is unheard of for me.) It was very easy to understand, even though I have some astrology knowledge, it still kept me interested. To confess, I gave up on today's astrology books because they were either too impersonal or too mindnumbingly difficult to follow. Too many of these other astro books are either unresearched or too heavily academic - this one is on pointe! How did that happen?? The write is very conversational and anecdotal, while giving reliable tips you can actually use in life. A practical astrology book? Who would have thought it? Ms. English did. Her book makes it relevant. I wish I had this book growing up as a Cap-rising with two Cappie parents. My teen years would have been a lot smoother. My whole world was Capricornian and if I read this book then, I would have had a much easier time understanding how to deal with Saturn and what it wants from us a lot better. Alas, you lucky people get to have it. :) Overall, I have discovered Mary English and I really look forward to her other books. I wish everyone wrote in this style because astrology IS personal, it needs to be relevant and why study it if you can't use it in your everyday life for positive relationship?? LOVE IT!

A Must-Read for Capricorns - and those who love them...

If you are a Capricorn, or have a Capricorn in your life, this is a must read! It is so much more than learning the qualities of this sign of the Zodiac - although those are included, of course. The author adds many anecdotes from public figures and her own personal and professional life; these illustrate how these qualities manifest themselves in careers and relationships. She also includes how to map your own astrological chart.

Very Interesting, Though I'm A Bit Biased

Being a magician myself this looked interesting to me. An entertaining read and I hope Mr. Costa can find a way to continue it. A fairly well-crafted story, though it could have been a little longer with the characters better developed. Also, would have liked to know a bit about the "event" that started the whole thing, but that is being nit-picky on my part. It's not really essential to the main storyline. Good artwork and an interesting story.

Interesting Alternate Earth

I was going through the graphic novel section of the library when I came across this book. I liked this story. It had many unexpected twists and turns. The alternate world developed by Costa is logical and consistent (with the exception of both speaking English). He layered the story well, dropping little surprises here and there that kept me interested throughout.

Imagine a world where magic was real and really worked on established and understood principles. A world similar to ours, but not identical. This is the world that stage magician Terry Ward finds himself in. To survive he becomes a street performer, is tricks and illusions--never seen on this world before--are as amazing to people there as to people here.

He has created a solitary existence for himself, always afraid that he will be discovered for being the only nonmagical person on the planet. Ethan is a young man who is not satisfied with the commonplace magic of his world. When he sees Ward perform, he is mystified, and batters his way past Ward's emotional defenses to become his pupil.

Before the story is finished, Ward finds himself up against one of the most accomplished magicians of this world he's found himself in.

It's a good one-shot graphic novel. Worth giving it a read.

Never read anything else quite like it

Ethan’s growing up in a world powered by magic. It makes lights, cars, washing machines, and computers work. He’s pretty gifted with it himself, but what he’s really interested in is the guy in Tobin Square who’s doing some *other* kind of magic that Ethan doesn’t understand. Yet.

This is an interesting book combining “real” magic and stage magic, as well as friendship and fighting evil. I wish this would have been an ongoing series, because I really wanted to know what happened next for these characters! But it does have an ending, so I’m trying to count my blessings.
