From a student's perspective

I am very glad that I discovered this book - I never knew that the Balkan Math Olympiad had such beautiful problems! I have since spent countless hours working on these problems.
What distinguishes this book from the BMO contests forum page on AoPS is the quality of the solutions and diagrams. Each problem is provided with at least one solution; all are complete and easy to follow. Often times the solutions show you an alternative method to the way you solved it and it is very satisfying. Furthermore, all geometry problems are supplied with really helpful diagrams that simplify the problem greatly. I have truly enjoyed this useful book and recommend it to anyone who is preparing for Math Olympiads.

Excellent contribution to the Maths Competition literature

This book is written by two experienced and wise hands from the mathematical olympiad circuit. In common with most international competitions, the problems and associated solutions are also available at the Art of Problem Solving website.

The advantage of using this excellent book rather than the AoPS site are that (a) the quality of the solutions is excellent, and you don't have to trawl through material wondering which suggested solutions are correct and which are flawed, (b) it is very handy to have these problems analyzed in one place and (c) the quality of the diagrams in the book is excellent.

The standard of the problems at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad is a bit easier than the IMO and the Romanian Master of Mathematics. On the other hand, the harder problems are more challenging than one finds in most national mathematical olympiads (except for those countries with a very strong mathematics competition tradition).

Who needs this book? Well, anyone preparing to sit a national mathematical olympiad (in the UK, BMO round 2) and anyone hoping to compete in a secondary (high) school international (regional or global) mathematics competition will enjoy this book. It would make an ideal birthday or Christmas (or culturally equivalent) present for a strong young mathematician. I urge schoolteachers who work in mathematically strong schools to make sure that this is held in the school library.

What I particularly like is that most of the problems are given more ...

This book presents 120 problems given at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad between
1984 and 2013. These are high quality Olympiad problems, which are little known outside
the space of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, as I could see myself during the
training of the US International Mathematical Olympiad Team. The problems originate
in a part of the world (Eastern Europe) with a long tradition in mathematics competitions.
The difficulty level of the problems is slightly below the International Mathematical Olympiad,
and on par with the national mathematical Olympiads of strong countries, and so this material
can be used by people training for such competitions.

The book is a true gem, as it presents very detailed and carefully written solutions.
The authors have put a lot of effort to make this book attractive to the reader,
both in contents and in appearance. What I particularly like is that most of the
problems are given more than one solution, allowing the reader to
"dominate" the problem. Because of this, some of the problems can make good
topics for math clubs and math circles.

The authors of the book are famous posers of Olympiad problems
and coaches of Olympiad teams. I have met them at various mathematical
events around the world, I have read their publications, and I can say that
they are true ambassadors of elementary mathematics. We are fortunate
to have them share some of their insights with us in this book.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in problem solving at
elementary level.

Metafiction

This book came at the right time for me. I've realized that the stories we tell ourselves are often the causes of our problems. Reality is not a story. Instead stories are how humans make sense of reality. As such, I've been interested in writing that does not have standard plots but can still keep the reader's interest. This book is a meditation on storytelling and the nature of reality. It also has a great dog.

Good for those into philosophy

This was a quirky novel about a woman in a bad relationship writing genre novels when she really wants to write a literary masterpiece. There's a bit of a soap opera with who likes who and who's cheating on who going on with her and her friends, which is kind of fun. I found this novel well-written but didn't really like the way it kept drifting off into philosophical discussions. I'd end up zoning out and then would get back into the book when the actual story continued. I guess I prefer books that keep to story . . . but I liked the writing and characters well enough that I finished the book and found it enjoyable. I think those into philosophy will probably enjoy this book.

A nod and a wink

With a tongue-in-cheek title such as "Our Tragic Universe," you know you're in for something off the beaten path. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which is a first-person episodic, mainstream novel. Or is it? Perhaps there's more going on here than meets the eye. For instance, think about this: the protagonist of the story, Meg, sounds an AWFUL lot like the book's author, Scarlett Thomas. They're both writers, teachers, British, mid-thirties, have academic chums...and the book is written in first person. So you keep thinking, hmm, is she talking about herself here? Is this autobiographical? And then there's the conversations throughout about philosophies of writing, about books, about writing a "storyless story" (which makes you think, Hey! This book itself seems to qualify for that. What's going on here?) Normally, I don't enjoy metafictions. But what makes this different from, say, If on a Winter's Night a Traveler (Everyman's Library (Cloth)), is that you don't feel the author is playing headgames at your expense. She seems to be inviting you to play along with her (perhaps a hint is that early on, Meg tells how she loves solving crossword puzzles--the British kind, of course). Suddenly you realize that you are reading--and enjoying--a non-standard, "storyless" novel. Well, it's episodic. So is Deep in the Shade of Paradise: A Novel, which I highly recommend, but wouldn't categorize as breaking the rules, really. It's just a story about a period in these people's lives, told by one of the people, named Meg. If you don't like Meg or her friends, the lack of plot is going to be a problem for you. And if you aren't well-versed in narrative theory, the whole pseudo-metafictional thing may just be a bore for you. But for me, as it happens, I'm reading up on how to write a novel, so I found these conversations very enjoyable. I've read Frank Tippler, and Rupert Sheldrake. I know about the Omega Point (it's the end of the universe), and morphic resonance (it's your dog knowing when you're about to walk in the door, though I have to say my dog doesn't do that.)

I was puzzled by Meg's relationship with Christopher. She's living for seven years with this loser who treats her with no respect. Abuse, is more like it. And we have no clue until near the end of the book as to why Meg ever took up with this schlmiel (he's angular and sexy, whatever that means). But why does she stay with him? She's a very "together" person, she's making a living as a writer, she's quite an admirable person in some ways. She certainly has a good relationship with her dog. So why does it take her SO LONG to deal with it? Another thing that puzzled me was why everyone in the book was having an affair. Is everyone in Britain morally bankrupt? Or is this just some chicklit convention I'm not aware of? Of relationships and such, Meg is mostly mum. We don't really know, often, what her reaction is to an event, such as her boyfriend saying something abusive. She'll just carry on by taking the dog for a walk, and never mentioning the conversation again, or until later. She withholds her thoughts and feelings at odd times, and tells us the backstories of the other characters in a seemingly haphazard way. But she's such a good writer that I'm sure all of this was done on purpose, and I'm not smart enough to get it. I would've enjoyed the book more had it explored the pseudo-science bits more. It seems to be more than psuedo in the book, and yet in the end, we have a "Zeb Ross" ending, where all is explained rationally away (you'll know what I mean when you read the book) at the end by the scientists.

Thomas makes us think about fiction, and how we wish there were meaning in our lives. That things happen for a reason, and that if you work hard and heroically, you will get the girl and vanquish the dragon. We like to think that the Universe is not just some tragic joke. That all can be fixed and have a happy ending in 22 minutes plus commercials. That there are secret powers we know nothing about, and we're all immortal. That we aren't living the lives we see on television, so we jump from bed to bed looking for the right sitcom to live in. Thomas makes you question the assumptions your life is built upon. There's a lot to think about and enjoy here. I'm glad I got a chance to read this, thanks to the Vine program. Thanks, Amazon!

John Hoskin is a British writer who has been based in Bangkok for the past 32 years. After completing a BA degree in History and a Masters in Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham, England, he began his career in London. My entire family is enjoying this book. There aren't a lot of photos or pictures but each chapter is short and clear about the topic at hand. I can easily hand this book to someone open to the chapter on Songkran and have them understand what it is about in the 10 minutes it takes to read the chapter. Clean, Clear, Concise. Good stuff! Preparing for Marriage: Counselors Pack

The pack includes a leader's guide and three copies of The Rainey's book Preparing for Marriage. The books themself are chalked full of exercises. There are exercises for the couple, as well as individual projects. I think that the books are a good tool and combined with several other pre-marital material are good for therapy.

Required reference for all city planners and transportation engineers

While AASHTO's Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, 4th Edition, is an improvement over the 3rd edition that was published in 1999, it's about 20 years behind in the research, particularly when it comes to bikeways in urban places. Notably, the AASHTO manual provides little or no positive guidance for separated bike facilities, but rather some cursory warnings about what not to do.

Into the void left by AASHTO (The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), steps NACTO (the National Association of City Transportation Officials). Building from the latest research on innovative bike treatments from cities around the US, the NACTO manual provides cities with detailed guidance on the safest, high quality bikeways for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Unlike most transportation manuals, this one is clearly written and understandable to lay audiences. It explains the reasoning behind the design recommendations, and it is clear about where there is flexibility and where there is not.

It is a required reference text for city planners, landscape architects, and transportation engineers.
