Wonderful to read for an understanding of Ukraine

From pre-history to Independence in 1991, this book surveys the history of Ukraine and its people. It is unique in not only portraying the history of the Ukrainian people but also includes the other peoples who live or have lived in the land now known as Ukraine.
The organization of the book is chronological with 49 chapters divided into ten parts. Each part covers a significant period in Ukrainian history: Pre-Kievan Times; the Kievan Period; the Lithuanian-Polish Period; the Cossack State; the Hetmanate; Ukraine in the Russian Empire; Ukraine in the Austrian Empire; World War I; the Interwar Years; and, World War II & the Postwar Years. Forty-two black-and-white maps help illustrate the concepts described in the text. Also included are thirty-six textual inserts which provide lengthy quotes of important documents. Sometimes these feel redundant because the author has described so well the events highlighted by the inserted texts.
For readers to whom 700 pages of Ukrainian history is not enough and who want to learn more about specific events or periods described in this book, Magocsi provides a forty page bibliographic essay called: For Further Reading. One of the great stumbling blocks for English-speaking readers who want to learn Ukrainian history is the fact that so many Ukrainian sources have not been translated. A great feature of this bibliography is that the vast majority of the works listed are in English.
Ukrainian history is complex. This book, although daunting to read because of its size and depth of coverage, can help the student of Ukrainian history untangle the puzzles of Ukraine and its people. It is a great reference work that belongs in the library of anyone interested in the subject.

Excellent Reference on Ukrainian History

Mr. Magocsi's "History of Ukraine" often takes a second billing to Mr. Subtelny's "Ukraine: A History" - and I think, unfairly. Both have a lot to offer, and frankly, no passionate student of Ukrainain history should choose one over the other. He or she should get both. A wealth of information, and first rate scholarship are impressive. Mr. Magocsi has done a first rate job. Mychajlo Hrushevsky would approve of both, and we should too.

History of Ukraine and Sweeping Narrative of Eastern Europe

Ukraine has a unique history in that it is difficult to pinpoint when Ukraine emrged - from its Kieven Rus roots, under the rule of the Duchy of Lithuania and then the Commonwealth of Poland/Lithaunia and then split in half between Muscovy and Poland and all the while the Ottomans at their doorstep. But Magocsi does a great, non biased job of telling the story of Ukraine and the overlapping history of her neighbors and conquerors (Lithuania, Poland, Russia and others) up to the point of her independence. I love this book! Each chapter is about 10 pages or so long and not one page is wasted - each chaulk full of info and history leading up to the next chapter with an ominous warning or prediction of things to come. The book flows nicely and I could not put it down! Please add this book to your volumes of Eastern European History!

One of the better modern commentaries on the Heart Sutra.

The Heart Sutra is almost like the Pater Noster or the Al-Fatiha of Mahayana Buddhism. Although I'm a former Roman Catholic who became a 12er Shia Muslim, I admire the beauty and brevity of this Sutra. My favorite commentary on this sutra is the one by Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. However, a close second is this commentary by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. For those Tibetan Buddhists who have it in for the New Kadampa Tradition, don't worry, because I liked the Dalai Lama's commentary, also. Just not quite as much as Kelsang Gyatso's New Heart of Wisdom. Red Pine (Bill Porter) has a good one, also, as does Rulu. If I didn't mention your favorite Dharma Master's commentary, its probably because I haven't read it yet. (smile)

Of course, Tibetan Buddhists use a slightly different version of the Heart Sutra than Zen Buddhists do. I like either version. Kelsang Gyatso's commentary gave some insights that were different from those of Thich Nhat Hanh's commentary, which is the result I hope for when reading commentaries of other Dharma teachers. Yet, even though Kelsang Gyatso is a Dharma Master in the New Kadampa Tradition and Thich Nhat Hanh comes from the Rinzai school of Zen, their teachings compliment each other very nicely.

For someone interested in the New Kadampa Tradition, I would not start with this book. After reading The New Heart of Wisdom, I bought the free 3-Volume Kindle Book Modern Buddhism and liked it enough that I bought the hardcover edition for my bookshelf. Modern Buddhism is the place to start. If, like me, you just want some background on Buddhism and just want to start a meditation practice, these 3 books - Modern Buddhism, The New Meditation Handbook, and the New Heart of Wisdom, is probably all you need. Be aware that if you be a part of the New Kadampa Tradition, eventually they will ask you to only read books by Kelsang Gyatso, which I don't see as a problem for those who want to be certified as a New Kadampa Tradition teacher. As a 12er Shia Muslim, I'm mainly interested in Buddhism primarily to develop my meditation practice and secondarily because of my interest in Comparative Religion. I couldn't be a New Kadampa Tradition Buddhist because I only pray to One God, so not even the enemies of the New Kadampa Tradition can fault me for reading Kelsang Gyatso's books because I'm not going to pray to Dorje Shugden anyway. I love and respect Shakyamuni Buddha and believe he was/is a Prophet of God, as do many Shia Muslims and traditional Sunni Muslims (especially Sufis) do. One can buy Thich Nhat Hanh's Old Paths, White Clouds - his biography of Shakyamuni Buddha, at Islamic Bookstores that cater to Sufi Muslims, as well as Nhat Hanh's books on the Meditation practice. In the end, Kelsang Gyatso's New Meditation Handbook could be used, also.

I find thich nhat hanhs writings to be very inspiring ...

I find thich nhat hanhs writings to be very inspiring and readable and preferred his commentary on this sutra. Geshe kelsang gyatsos book for me is harder to read. I am not an NKT member but find charles millers review to be laced with anger although he denies it. Surely the way of buddhism in this situation would be to be deeply mindful so that opposing views can be understood and any criticism which needs to be made can be done so in a humble and respectful tone.

If you are looking for a book full of quick mental magic gags, this isn't very good. All the tricks in this book require either A) Advanced skills in slight of hand (palming, quick switches, etc) or B) A gimmicked apparatus. It isn't as easy as amazing your buddies at a party with some mind reading tricks. These are for more advanced magicians. It was also written in 1944.

That being said, it is a very interesting look into how some of this stuff is (or was) accomplished. I have seen several of these tricks used before and wondered how they were pulled off, now I know.

If you are a magician with basic skills in slight of hand, palming, and switching, then you will probably find some cool additions to your performance here.

If you are looking for some basic stuff to baffle your friends with, this is not the right book for you.

One of the two mentalism Bibles

This, along with Corinda's "13 Steps to Mentalism" is an absolute essential for anybody that wants to get into the art of mindreading. It covers all of the main ruses, and Anneman's work with Billets is, in my opinion, unparalleled. Some effects are somewhat dated (i.e. some effects encorporate the "magician's force", which is now widly known by the layman), but considering it was first published in 1944 this is to be expected.

Beautifully written and compiled, and very cheap for the amount that you have to work with.

The book is literally packed with excellent routines and techniques, most of which require little or no sleight of hand skills. Though somewhat dated (you may have a litlle trouble finding some of the materials used) it is chock-full of "how'd he do that" stuff. The variety of material contained is wonderful also. From billets to cards to envelopes to codes to blind-folds to money routines. Just get it! You won't be sorry. I hear that Mark Striving has modernized some of it with a book "Annemann Updated" or something to that effect. I would be interested in that but can't find it

You are Wrong!

We've bought this a couple times, but are a bit disappointed this year. There have been at least half a dozen pages where the answers are actually wrong. By that I don't mean that I just disagreed with their answer, but rather that they had the completely wrong answer. For example one of the "burnt matches" answers wasn't even the same picture as the actual puzzle. It is obvious nobody proofread an actual printed deck.

It needs work

I like the idea of this calendar a lot, but the editors did a poor job making sure the puzzles are solvable. On many occasions I have struggled with a puzzle only to flip to the solution and see that it is to an entirely different puzzle, or there is a typo on the puzzle that was corrected for the solution. This just makes the calendar frustrating to use and always has me second guessing whether the puzzles is being extra tricky, or it is just wrong. They also use the term "common words" or everyday words for words no one uses regularly.

We buy one every year to help us wake up in the morning. It works. Most puzzles can be worked out, and only a few are too obscure, or require specialized knowledge. Great "brain-awakener".

What a story. Thank you Mr Weaver. Your courage and determination is inspiring. I grew up in the 60's I was part of the movement for Civil Rights and affirmative action. And like you I chose to do it my way. I wish there were more men like you to lead all the young people. Not the like of the so called leaders of today. If there were more man like yourself race relations would be where they should be, and not where they are now with all this race baiting. Thank you for your book and thank for sharing your life with those of us that found your book. I tell everyone I talk to about it. I hope to see you more in the public light. We all need better leaders

From liberalism to conservatism

This is a really good book promoting freedom from governmental control. He equates self-reliance to a slave's "leaving the plantation." A good analogy, and I would also say it's similar to a young adult leaving his parents' home. It's a scary feeling to step out on your own, but it is so personally rewarding to learn how to care for yourself and make your own way. We do no favors to people by keeping them dependent.
