Wasn't Satisfied

This book is more about how the author learned about and worked with self-hypnosis. It doesn't actually have well planned out steps to hypnotise yourself. It has a quick "how do ya do?" and then it goes back to the side-effects, the history of self-hypnosis, how they came to love hypnosis-I was looking for a step by step book on how to hypnotise yourself. This book didn't meet my standards. If you want a book on the history of hypnotising, or what happens when you do it wrong, or how a random author came to love hypnosis, heres a book for you!

A Classic Worth Having

This book has a special place in my heart because it's one of the books that got me interested in hypnosis and self hypnosis many years ago when books on this subject were scarce and hardly ever available in conventional bookstores.

While some of the material is dated, much of it stands the test of time. If it's basic information about self-hypnosis you want while staying on a budget(e.g. free on Kindle and 6.99 for the paperback), this is a great place to start. There is some practical "how to" in it; certainly enough to start experimenting.

Melvin Powers, for those of us old enough to know, put out a LOT of very interesting books and material through his press, Wilshire Book Company. His other books on hypnosis included Advanced Techniques of Hypnosis, and he's one of the few authors who mention the induction of hypnosis through the use of mesmerism (using the energy in one's gaze). It may sound like hooey to some folks, but I predict that one day it'll make a comeback. What's old will become new again--no doubt under a term someone creates to make it more palatable for a modern audience.

Melvin Powers has contributed to the current popularity of hypnosis and self hypnosis books. Of that, there is no doubt in my mind. If you are a collector of hypnosis books (like I am), then A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SELF HYPNOSIS is a must-have. It's a classic and for that reason, and a few others, I have given it FIVE STARS.

This book saved my life.

This book literally saved my life. Many years ago, I had a debilitating stuttering problem that was crushing my then nascent legal career. A psychiatrist, the late Dr. Frank S. Caprio, suggested that I study it and learn to hypnotize myself. I read Melvin Powers 130 or so page book and became excited. I then read it several more times. After that, I studied the "how to" chapters (Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, in particular), and I began to apply them diligently, practicing giving myself self-hypnosis treatments in 20 minute increments. I gave myself these treatments (1) before going to sleep at night, (2) before arising in the morning and (3) one or more times during the day, when I could get to a quite place. I was diligent. I became so good at "putting myself under" that I could do so (and did) while standing on a bus while holding the overhead hand-strap. I became able to put myself under for very specific time periods (20, 15, 10 or even just 5 minutes), and I would come out of hypnosis almost to the second of my targeted time. There are levels or degrees, of course, of hypnotic state. If "1" is normal consciousness and "10" is being total hypnotized, I probably reached a "7" or "8" at my peak, but I found ALL levels, even a 1 or 2, were beneficial. I cured 90% of my stuttering problem within months and I cured the rest of it slowly over a several year period. I haven't stuttered in decades. I continue to use self-hypnosis to manage depression, boredom, anxiety, memory-loss and it even helps with pain-suppression. I owe Melvin Powers an enormous debt of gratitude. Long before Amazon began selling this book, I used to buy dozens at a time from Mr. Powers company in California, and I gave them away to friends and family. I continue to do that. I even pay my grandkids to read this book. If you have any problems with your attitude and in controlling your feelings and thoughts, this book will teach you how to hypnotize yourself and handle those problems. As the psychiatrist who recommended this book to me said, "Hypnosis and self-hypnosis are not scary; hypnosis is nothing more than a heightened state of relaxation, and, when you're 'under', you are not in danger; you will always awaken to normal stimuli." Anyway, this book literally saved my legal career, by enabling me to conquer stuttering and continue to practice law, and that saved my life. It's short, sweet and user-friendly. About the Author

Dr. Roger J. Best is an Emeritus Professor of Marketing at the University of Oregon. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from California State Polytechnic University in 1968. Following graduation, he joined the General Electric Company where he worked in both engineering and product management. While at GE, he received a patent for a product he developed. Dr. Best completed his MBA at California State University, Hayward in 1972 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 1975. He taught at the University of Arizona from 1975 to 1980 and the University of Oregon from 1980 to 2000.

Over the past twenty-five years, he has published over fifty articles and won numerous teaching awards. In 1998 he received the American Marketing Association Distinguished Teaching in Marketing award. In 1988, the Academy of Marketing Science voted an article on marketing productivity by Dr. Best and co-authors the outstanding Article of the Year. He is a co-author of Consumer Behavior: Implications for Marketing Strategy (8th ed.). Dr. Best has also developed the Marketing Excellence Survey (www.MESurvey.com), a benchmarking tool for assessing a manager's marketing knowledge and market attitudes based on a worldwide database of over 15,000 managers and MarkProf (www.MarkProf.com), an online marketing profitability tool to help marketing managers "mess the profit impact of marketing strategies.

Over the past twenty years, Dr. Roger J. Best has been active in working with a variety of companies in both marketing strategy consulting and management education. These companies include General Electric, Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, DuPont, Eastman Kodak, MediaOne, Lucas Industries, Tektronix, ESCO, Pacific Western Pipe, James Hardie industries, Sprint, and US West. Dr. Best has also taught many executive management education programs at INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France.

Great material and ideas... needs a little fine tuning in later editions

This is a very pricey book for an MBA course of mine. It's got great concepts and a very quantitative method for evaluating marketing, which is great because when marketing programs are the first to get cut in the budget, it's nice to have proof of how effective they are. The author also has a compatible website with additional tools for marketing.

Still, I think that the book is really dense with not enough real-world examples. Also, the graphs alluded to on one page are found on a different page, which makes it difficult to follow along (sometimes graphs are in the future, and others they have already been shown).

His methods are great in theory, but a lot of them would be impossible to configure in real life. For example, when does anyone truly know the true market attractiveness score? It's an estimate, at best. Great start, though. I hope that the 6th edition is a little better organized...

Best nuts-and-bolts book on creative writing

For my money, this is the best book available about creative narrative writing. Burroway's book is used as a text for short story and novel writing. The chapter "Showing and Telling" alone is worth the price of the book.
Other areas covered by chapters in the book are as follows:
Story form and structure
Characterization: Two chapters that cover every thing from dialogue to detailing the five ways to develop a character: authorial interpretation, appearance, action, speech, and thought
Setting and atmosphere
Point of View
Literary devices such as symbol, metaphor, etc.
Theme
Revision: This chapter is the weakest because it discusses revision in general, not giving specific problems that plague manuscripts. The most prevalent flaws are discussed in the book, but I think it would be helpful to list them in this chapter and give page numbers where the technique is discussed.
I have read over twenty books pertaining to creative writing, but this one is better than all the rest. What I like best are the numerous stories that are at the end of each chapter illustrating the points discussed in that section. Each chapter concludes with questions to guide one's study.
In my reading of books about fiction writing, I have found numerous references to this book which indicates to me the quality of this book to other writers.
If you can only afford one book, get this one. I don't think you will be disappointed if you are serious about your fiction.

Best book on the craft of writing ever written!

I teach writing in the UCLA Writer's Program (online) and always recommend this and "What If" by Ann Bernays and Pam Painter. Burroway's book is absolutely the best book on the craft of writing I've ever found. Anybody who aims to write well would do him- or herself a huge favor by buying this book. I've been drawn to it over and over when writing my own books, "The Death of Tarpons" (novel), "Monday's Meal" (Collection of short stories; and my forthcoming "Over Easy" from Random House and Ballantine Books (1999). I'm now involved in writing screenplays and the techniques Ms. Burroway covers in her book cover that form as well. I think giving it 5 stars is not enough and if it were possible to award ten stars, I would, enthusiastically. If you only buy one book on writing in your lifetime, make it this one!
