This Do-It-Yourself Guidebook Helped Me Get My First SES Position

I was overwhelmed with the ECQ writing requirements, and having a hard time even getting started. However, the tools and techniques in this guidebook, as well as the real examples that were included, gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed. Using this book, I was able to write my own narratives and successfully obtained my first SES position. Although as a "do-it-yourself" project, you have to put in the work, this book ensures that your are working on the right things in the right way for a successful SES job application.

Common Sense and Magic

Walt Disney World is an organization that has a 70% return rate for guests, as well as one of the lowest employee turnover rate. Disney World is considered to be the biggest tourist attraction, 25,000 acres with four parks, 32 hotels, as well as plenty of other buildings to maintain. When visiting, guests often feel as though they are in a land of magic due to how the front line employees (maids, street sweepers, desk clerks) treat the guests. Yet behind good front line employees are their leaders that enable them to create magic. Cockerell was once that leader; VP of Operations; the man who made the giant city sized tourist attraction run smoothly. His strategies are listed simply and filled with common sense ideas that although he doesn't reference any, can be backed up with research. The checklists at the end of every chapter enables the reader to easily put forth what they learn from the book into their own company or even in smaller leadership roles that they may have. Since it is filled with 'common sense' the strategies are very easy to understand, especially since in his work life, Cockerell has many examples to pull from that show why he leads the way he leads, and why you should lead that way too.

Cockerell provides vivid examples of why he uses the strategies that he uses, as well as why the reader should use them as well. His writing style is simplistic as well as very organized, making it a very easy read. The way he organizes his book seems to also showcase how he is a very organized leader and gives merit to his book. His book allows the reader to go inside one of the most well-known companies and see exactly why the company works the way that it works. Reading it will give incite on why they have the lowest turnover rate, and why guests can’t seem to get enough of the theme parks.

The leadership strategies Cockerell provides are very easy to understand, as well as to follow. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to be a leader, or even a great employee. The book not just for those in the workforce, the ten common sense strategies can be used by many people in different positions in their life. This makes the book a very good read for anyone who is interested in improving their relationship with those around them, being more trusting and fair.

I gave this book five stars being that when one visits the park, you can see for yourself that the leadership strategies employed by Walt Disney Worlds are one worth attempting. Disney World does create magic, and reading this book will enable one to create magic in their organization or their life as well.

Excellent business and life lessons

Overall, Mr. Cockerell's book provides straightforward and common sense lessons for creating better companies, better employees, and a better you. I appreciate the frank and honest approach taken in the book. The author discusses his successes and failures evenly, even when his mistakes led to physical retribution from his employees! Considering the hospitality industry's complex operational and HR issues, I can appreciate his recommendations that are easily implementable yet powerful ways to improve a business.

One issue I have with the book, while not directly relevant to the overall subject, is not discussing in enough detail the importance of developing a company's long-term strategy for success. Anecdotally, I have heard that Disney has a large number of fresh out of business school MBAs that are more concerned about short term profits and cost control than maintaining high quality standards and preserving long-term brand identity. I would be interested to get the author's reaction to this challenge, which he surely must have dealt with during Eisner's last years as CEO. While the author must consider his relationship with his former employer, it would have been interesting to get his reaction to a sore subject that many would argue has challenged the long-term success of Disney's brand.

I hope Mr. Cockerell considers writing more life and business lessons in a future book. I will be among those to purchase a copy!

Lee Cockerell is the modern day plain speaking advice giver.

This book is one you can buy for your entire team or the employees of your small to mid-sized business and re-chart the course. There is no other book that boils down the DIsney way and makes it applicable for the every day manager.

I love Cockerells way of making his message direct and understandable. Plus, this is management theory crap from an academic theorist. This is a book from a guy that walks the walk (even though it appears the walk was through the happiest place in the world; Disney World.

There are not many business books out there that you can read a chapter, put the book down and go and affect change in your organization.

Surprised by the positive reviews- Brody was a bust!

I love western romance and looked forward to reading my first Emma Lang book...what a disappointment! The lead male Brody is a Texas Ranger but in my opinion was a weak, indecisive one. He is shown up by the female lead Olivia in their first dangerous encounter and he continues to be distracted by the fact that she is a female. Olivia is smart and brave but is also a horny, nagging shrew and it got old real fast! The writing is choppy, the language is crude and seems gratuitous since it lends nothing to the story. The situations they find themselves in are poorly written and are unrealistic. Case in point...after Olivia has just killed two men for the first time with the resulting blood and gore landing all over Brody, he has barely had a chance to wipe the brain matter off his face before she starts kissing him! Gross.... She is mean and hateful one minute, then tries to jump his bones the next... what the heck? There is very little nuance in their relationship and the character development is weak. I may be in the minority with this review, but you got to call them as you see em and Brody was a bust. I think I'll just stick with Linda Lael Miller and Bobbi Smith if I want a good, solid western romance.

Brody is Hot and this series just keeps getting better!

I think I may have liked this one more than the 1st book of the series. Brody and Olivia have a push/pull relationship that keeps you drawn in and their sex is HOT! I found myself wanting to know more, more, more as I read which is always a good thing. Yes the Benjamin issue grates on my nerves and I honestly feel I can handle only 1 more book before something substantial happens or I'll be annoyed. This book is one however you do not want to miss!

All the current reviews say it all so I won't try to re-say it in different words. Brody is a wonderful 2nd installment to the Circle Eight series - the reader gets a real feel for life in those dangerous but exciting times. Now I wait "patiently" for the 3rd book in this series which will be Caleb's story. It will go on pre-order as soon as possible. Thanks you, Ms Lang!

Oh geez, I could barely finish this one. The only good part was when Kristy & Mitch got together. Other than that, it was a disaster! I just didn't care for all the crazy characters in this book!

Totally Loved this Book

If you like off-the-wall comedy along with romance and suspense...read this book! Robyn Peterman has a way with words. This book had me in stitches. Several times I laughed so hard I cried. The suspense was such that I couldn't put the book down. You need to read "How Hard Can it Be" to get some of the references in this book. However, it would still be funny even if you don't. I have read 3 of Robyn's books (How Hard Can It Be, Fashionably Dead, and Size Matters) and I cannot wait to read another.

Excellent book!

I must confess: the first time I heard about Senna was when I saw Asif Kapadia's film. I've never been interested in motor racing, in fact in any kind of racing, generally speaking I'm not into sports. I went to see the film just because it was presented as a documentary and I loved it. Brilliant. I was totally fascinated by Senna's complex personality, his charisma. I saw the film several times, then I started to buy books and read about him and his absolute passion for formula 1. I think Senna was a gift to Formula 1 taking into consideration that even now, 17 years after his death, his personality is capable of making new fans. And this is good for all the drivers of that era, otherwise they are almost forgotten or unknown (to those who are not formula 1 fans). I would've never known that Alain Prost,G. Berger, Ron Dennis,and so many more ever existed if I hadn't have the wonderful opportunity to watch the film and see the real Senna in action. I am so happy that his life never became a biopic made in Hollywood with an actor in Senna's role. I loved the book written by Richard Williams. First I read another book and I was kind of disappointed although it contained lot of information. I didn't like the style though and I was disappointed thinking that Ayrton really deserves much better writing. The way Asif Kapadia made such a compelling film, Richard Williams accomplished in the book. I read in two days and I loved it. I highly recommend it.

Underhill is caught between his own fear and his sister's invocation of reason and feels paralyzed. A mysterious boy calls out to him from the playground, and seems to know all too well why Underhill is there and what the source of his agony really is. A mysterious Manager also lurks to whom the strange boy directs Underhill. An agreement can be made perhaps―this is what the boy tells Underhill. Perhaps Jim can be spared the playground, but of course, a substitute must be found.

A little too close to home...

A great read if you have a cup of hot tea...you'll finish before the tea goes cold. I particularly love Bradbury's description of the Playground, the imagery can almost be smelled and touched. The way he weaves this story is a cultural testimony to American childhood, and to parenthood. And having a young son myself, living not far from several playgrounds, this story hit a little close to home. Unfortunately, living in the suburbs means that the biggest scares for my young kids are not the anguishes of this story, but the fears of plastic swings, splinters from wood chips, and runaway scooters. So, enjoy this taste of Bradbury's best, from the safety of your couch and Kindle.

Hairy scary

I have always loved Ray Bradbury and have never read this short story. I loved it. It was so "Twilight Zone". I read it at night on my Kindle and was a little disturbed/scared with the ending. I wish Kindle had more stories by Ray Bradbury. I would read all of them but maybe not at night.

Unlike many philosophical tracts, Rationality in Action invites the reader to apply the author's ideas to everyday life. Searle shows, for example, that contrary to the traditional philosophical view, weakness of will is very common. He also points out the absurdity of the claim that rational decision making always starts from a consistent set of desires. Rational decision making, he argues, is often about choosing between conflicting reasons for action. In fact, humans are distinguished by their ability to be rationally motivated by desire-independent reasons for action. Extending his theory of rationality to the self, Searle shows how rational deliberation presupposes an irreducible notion of the self. He also reveals the idea of free will to be essentially a thesis of how the brain works.

Lucid and Stimulating

Searle's _Rationality in Action_ is lucid and accessible. The thrust of the book is to show that desire-independent reasons for action are commonplace (as opposed to the traditional or "Classical" model - Hume, Williams, Davidson, modern decision theory, etc. - that reasons for action follow desires). Searle argues that there is a gap between reason and decision, decision and action, and continuing to do an action and that reasons for rational action actually are made effective by the agent (the person).
I found the section distinguishing reasons for action from justification for action quite interesting. The explanation of what Searle calls "weakness of the will" follows very logically from the rest of his argument and is no problem for his theory of rationality. Finally, Searle touches on the question of neurobiological determinism versus freedom of the will.
Anyone who has followed Searle's previous works on intentionality, consciousness, speech acts, and institutional facts will find this as punchy, logical, and clear.
All in all, _Rationality in Action_ is an enjoyable work of philosophy.

Excellent and honest

This book is in many senses a very unusual philosophy one. First, even though, the topic is not easy Searle has showed an extreme effort and capacity to express himself with clarity. In this book you can always know what the author thinks, based on which premises he believes so, and of course what problem he is trying to solve.
I got surprised when I saw that Searle changed his view respect to the free will expressed in "minds, brain and science" where he reached to the conclusion that no real free will may exist. In this book he not only accept his error, but also produce a complete description of the "gaps" that cannot be filled with necessity and, therefore, require free will. He moves one step forward and declares that a humean being is not enough to describe human beings, on the contrary a substantial being able of free will is what is required.
So clarity, rigor and honesty is the characteristic of this book.
Going to the book, it basically says that in our action there are gaps, meaning for gaps, actions that cannot be completely explained by external causes, so we, as free will holders, must decide our actions. This is extensively discussed in it, and so are many of the consequences of that.
In the book Searle tried to provide an explanation for moral commitment based on the compromise derived from the use of language instead of solutions based on cost-benefit analysis.
I believe that he is right in the second, partially right in the recognition of the importance of speech acts as compromisers but I certainly believe that we need more to justify he ethic behavior.
I'll wait for new books from Searle , I want to read more shinning thoughts like those showed in this book and I may end up finding that he keeps improving.

Well, here we go again. Back to the proverbial rationality and free will drawing board. I recommend a slew of preliminary texts as an overview of the field, such as Williams, Scheffler, Korsgaard, Scanlon, Velleman, Nozick, etc.
Nevertheless, Searle writes with his usual clear, direct, and economic prose. He enters a crowded practical reason debate with, again, his usual bravado. He argues against Williams's externalist view by describing substantial tautological errors. But this approach tends to oversimplify Williams's complex view. One wonders if Searle's reading of Williams is actually right (or careful enough). I prefer Scanlon's handling of W's externalism in the Appendix to What We Owe to Each Other, and McDowell's well-known article on the subject.
The strength of Searle's book is his defense of an internalist view of rationality and action, which resurrects his views on intentionality and speech acts. He thoroughly demonstrates in one chapter how a Deductive Model in rationality (i.e., a practical syllogism ala Kenny) cannot work. He also clearly identifies the major problems in practical reason, conflicting reasons, and defends a novel approach, what he calls a semantic categorical imperative. This is a controversial view, which navigates between (or circumvents) Humean and Kantian theories on moral motivation.
Another stregth of the book is how Searle connects rationality in action (hence the title of the book) and his theory of intentionality to the free will problem. In the last chapters, he clearly identifies just what the nature of the free will problem is, which is pretty much a rehashing of his chapter in Minds, Brains, and Science (Harvard UP). The reader gets a clear picture of how and why the free will issue is a major contemporary philosophical problem, requiring a correct scientific research project to help solve the problem. One also gets a clear view of a top-notch philosopher at work on this serious problem. It is obvious why this problem has kept Searle awake at nights--why he misses the freeway on-ramp during his drive to work. It is a seemingly insoluable problem, and Searle makes the nature of the problem and the reasons that it keeps philosophers awake at night explicit.
So the book closes, basically, with a challenge for philosophers to continue work on free will and rationality. It is also a challenge for scientists in the labs to work on a research program that would identify the whole problem and its potential solution.
