His magnum opus was the founding of Speech to Speech, a federally mandated telephone service for people with speech disabilities.

fascinating

Great book. I'm a healthcare professional, yet I knew very little about the psychosocial aspects of life with cerebral palsy. Dr. Segalman's book is a fast read with fascinating insight into a world most people will never know or understand. Well worth the $12 bucks. I wish I would have went to his website first, because apparently for the same price the author will sign and ship. I'm not sure if that is still the case, though.

An amazing story about Bob's victory over his disability

Having been a friend of Bob's for nearly fifty years, I might be accused of having a bias in strongly recommending this book to all disabled and able-bodied people. But I don't need that bias to say that this book is so important, especially for us 'able-bodied' types.

For those of us who have never lived with a disability, it's impossible to know what it is to live with that disability day in and day out. What is it like to be disabled in all stages of life? What is it like to try to express yourself when your body will never cooperate? What kinds of issues do disabled people have to deal with in all phases of life? For the answer to many if not all of these questions, all you have to do is to read Bob's book.

This book is a story of Bob's life, and how Bob has never let his cerebral palsy define him. His courage and determination to be heard and loved and understood outside of that framework have taught me so much about living my own life.

If you want to get a story about disability 'from the source', you couldn't find a better book than Bob's. And it is told with candor and his always-present well-honed sense of humor.

Bob used his passion to be heard into a non-profit that gives a voice to many people with speech disabilities, Speech-to-Speech ([...] I support them and I hope that after reading this book, you will do the same. I was looking forward to reading this as it popped up on a search for Pepper Pace (how or why I couldn't tell you) and had a lot of five star reviews. The protagonist clearly did not want to identify with being black, and had a lot of self-hating going on. In a moment in America where black women are winning, I was disappointed that Red was Sao consumed with self-loathing. I get that she was Creole, but why reference her as black so much if she couldn't identify with ANY type of black experience. There are wealthy, educated blacks that embrace their identity and are NOT self-haters. Even her marrying Jon while I get that it was bad intentioned from all perspectives as part of the plot, it really felt like she wanted to marry some unattainable white man and be accepted as white in his social circles, but was scared of rejection. The odd thing was her white male love interest was devoid of any of those issues almost like because he was white he was right. Red seemed like a white woman (who hates black women), trapped in a black woman's body. Really weird to read something like this in 2014. I couldn't help hoping that the author gets a therapist to help her work through whatever black self-hate she has. Yes, not all black people listen to hip hop and many love alternative/rock but it should be clear in this day and age musical taste does define the black experience. Another thing, invest in an editor.

Beware of "74" 5 star ratings

This has to be the most annoying book, that I have read in a really long time. Because of all of the 5 star ratings. I was expecting a great read. Instead I got misplaced words, missing words. Sentences that didn't make sense. And the most annoying writing style. Was I the only one who didn't know where they were most of the time. The locale changed from paragraph to paragraph. The story concept okay, hence the 1 star. Will I buy this author again. Never.

My favorite book of 2013

I loved this book I read it in one day, it was an excellent story the best book I've read this year. It was sweet & funny, it had an unexpected twist at the end, I loved every chapter I could NOT PUT IT DOWN. Every character was real, and I can honestly say I know someone like that, which made it even better. Please keep writing. Amazing. On my list of favorites, I think I can read it again and again.

Modern paraphrase of ancient classic

Tao Te Ching is ancient, now a couple of millenia in print. Stephen Mitchell has not translated this classic, but rather has paraphrased it -- as he admits in the Foreward. But he is a Zen student of a couple of decades and has good insight into the Zen of the Tao (Zen Buddhism is Buddhism heavily dosed with Taoism).

Mitchell's version of the Tao Te Ching is very, even extremely, modern. Perhaps to the point of being "politically correct." However, he does have a way with words and this is a very readable version of the Tao. To show how modern it is, let's take an example and compare his version of the beginning of chapter 46 with two other versions:

- Mitchell
"When a country is in harmony with the Tao,
the factories make trucks and tractors.
When a country goes counter to the Tao,
warheads are stockpiled outside the cities."

- Victor Mair
"When the Way prevails under heaven,
swift horses are relegated to fertilizing fields.
When the Way does not prevail under heaven,
war-horses breed in the suburbs."

- Addiss & Lombardo
"With TAO under heaven
Stray horses fertilze the fields.
Without TAO under heaven,
Warhorses are bred at the frontier."

Obviously, there were no factories, trucks, tractors, or warheads in ancient China. So, Mitchell is providing a modern interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, while Mair as well as Addiss & Lombardo are closer to a literal translation (which is not possible however, because the Chinese language and the English language are so completely different from one another.)

None of this is to find fault with Stephen Mitchell. This is just to say that his book cannot be definitive, because it is less literal and not really a translation. However it is good, compelling reading, and honestly makes no pretense of being a literal translation. If you like Mitchell's approach, get one of the more literal translations too. I bet Stephen Mitchell himself would like you to have both.

This is the ONE book my wife kept nearby while she was dying

When my wife Sandy was diagnosed with terminal cancer, this is the ONE book she kept nearby at home and in the hospital. She found great comfort in it words and wisdom.
When she died I picked it up and began to read. Several passages fell right open (8 & 16). These were the passages that she must have been reading the most. So I read those passages at her funeral. I'm still reading this book and finding something new with each reading. Even if a passage may not make sense on the first or second reading, it may become clear by the fifth or sixth. Or maybe it will take years.
Sandy was a poet and teacher who studied many translations of the Tao, but this was her favorite. It may not be the most literal translation, but it surely is the most poetic. If this translation was good enough for her, then it's good enough for me.
In fact, this book is so good, I've given away at least 8 copies in the two months since her death. This book has helped me deal with and survive the most difficult time in my life. I'm much wiser and more open having read this book. My friends to whom I've given copies agree and are sharing it with their friends.

As good as it gets, considering "the way resembles nothing"

I've been using this translation since 1965 and have found no better. When I want to clarify something, I struggle with a Chinese language edition - my knowledge of Chinese is sufficient to know at least the 'raw' meaning of the characters. Some thoughts and discoveries I've had...

1. D.C.Lau's translation comes closest to the actual Chinese most of the time.

2. I believe he does not consider himself a Taoist, and thus brings less 'pro' bias to his translation. Many other translations (not all) I've seen are written by 'pro Tao' folks who, to one degree or another, unconsciously bend their translations to agree with the 20th century cultural paradigm (values) in which they were conditioned.

3. It is not what a particular translation says, or how it says it, that is 'enlightening'. How you interpret what you read (hear or see) reflects who you really are at that moment. In other words, what you perceive the book to say is actually your own mind's reality. The notion that one translation or another is going to impart 'knowing' is wishful thinking. The knowing lies in the eye of the beholder. Thus, the disclaimer in chapter 1 of the Tao Te Ching, "The way that can be spoken of is not the constant way; The name that can be named, is not the constant name." This sentiment speaks to just how very inward and personal a Taoist journey is. For me, D.C.Lau's translation gets in the way of this journey less than others I've seen over the years.

counselor and group therapist I found this book to be a wonderful, refreshing read

As a former teacher, counselor and group therapist I found this book to be a wonderful, refreshing read. From a thorough and at times painstaking review of modern science and quantum physics Dr Rowland challenges the prevailing view that consciousness is simply a product of our material brain. He proposes instead that our “conscious mind” is independent of our material self and is part of the mysterious non-material energy that scientists now acknowledge is an integral part of the universe. From his medical experience as a doctor and his special interest in mental health Gavin then proposes that his new model of understanding adds new and revealing insights into psychology and the mental health of all human beings. This was a life-changing book for me that will take pride of place on my shelf of reading treasures. I highly recommend this book to anyone as a fascinating insight into who we are and especially to all health professionals and those folk who continue to insist that our conscious self is simply a product of the grey matter between our ears.

Will change your view of how your mind and the world actually works

A fascinating and courageous book that's given me a new perspective on not only the human mind but also the world and universe. I say courageous because despite being a practising doctor, Rowland is prepared to explore the limitations of current scientific knowledge and advance a unique and compelling new theory. The book also explains many scientific principles in a clear and easy to understand way. Definitely worth a read.

About the Author
Dr Charles D. Stanton is a former US naval officer and airline pilot who, after retirement, studied medieval Mediterranean history at Cambridge under David Abulafia. His particular focus is the Norman conquest of southern Italy and Sicily on which he has published several well-received articles in scholarly journals. His recent book, Norman Naval Operations in the Mediterranean, has also been highly praised.

A rather superb overview and starting point

These (as mentioned in this review's title) were the book’s objectives and I was rather happy to discover that they have been fully achieved. Given that this is an overview, and because of the book’s scope – roughly ten centuries – the reader might find in some cases that the author has somewhat and sometimes “cut corners”. Those that have already read more specialised books or one or the other of the periods covered will nevertheless find that there is a fair amount of detail included (much more than I initially expected, anyway!) and that all of the main points are well-made, starting with the limitations of naval warfare under oars and sail at the time. Also included are some good summaries of at least some of the main debates that have taken place among historians and a rather fascinating collection of illustrations, including some superb pictures of Scandinavian warships

A second - and related – major feature of this book is that it is a compilation and a summary. As such, it does not contain any original findings. However, it draws on just about all of the main specialists for each of the various periods covered and contains ample notes and a bibliography which will allow anyone wanting to go any further to do so. Note, however, that the bibliography seems to have been deliberately kept short, possibly to avoid burdening the general reader. A number of titles are omitted from it, both because they are quoted and referenced in more recent titles that are included in the bibliography and because they are listed and referenced among the notes (with total some fifty five pages).

A third feature of this book is its rather interesting and easy to read structure. A short introduction of some nine pages summarises the main components and limitations of medieval naval warfare. This is followed by ten chapters separated into two sections. Each chapter summarises the struggle under review and ends with a focus on a specific and particularly noteworthy naval battle or siege in which naval forces played a prominent role – a case study of sorts. The first section (six chapters) deals with naval warfare in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The second section (the remaining four chapters) is about naval warfare across the North Sea, the Baltic and the English Channel.

All of the main conflicts and periods that I was expecting to find were included, such as the Byzantine-Muslim struggle, the key and vital role played by the “naval connection” during the Crusades, “The Viking Onslaught” or the “Norman Invasion” (1066 and all that), and the Hundred Years War. AIso included are less well known but nevertheless important episodes, such as the Norman expansion in the central Mediterranean (the author’s speciality), the wars of the Angevines versus the Aragonese over the control of Sicily, the deadly rivalries between Pisa and Genoa and then Genoa and Venice and a very interesting chapter on the German Hanse. A final advantage of these ten chapters is that they can be read separately.

Excellent introduction to a fascinating topic

This is an excellent book, if you are interested in the subject matter. Stanton describes, with pictures, the evolution of maritime technology. As for warfare, he divides the subject into the Mediterranean theater dominated by Genoa, Venice, and the Ottomans, on the one hand, and Northern Europe on the other, concentrating on Vikings, the Hanse, and the French/English battles. At the end of each general description, he provides a detailed consideration of some significant battle, significant in the sense of the development of naval warfare as well as historically so. The writing is clear, well edited, and the illustrations profuse and appropriate. I read most of this book on my Kindle, but examined the illustrations on my Kindle for iPad, which presented them in color, and capable of being zoomed in on. Aside from matters directly related to warfare, Stanton provides enough social and economic context to make the significance of the military matters clear. I am not an expert in this field, but my impression is that this book would be enjoyed by both the general reader, and the more knowledgeable.

'Maritime historian Stanton ("Norman Naval Operations in the Mediterranean", etc.) has produced a readable, very serious study of naval warfare in the wider European world from the age of Justinian to the Renaissance. The book has two parts, a long one on the Mediterranean and a shorter one on the North and Baltic Seas, and their adjacent waters. He covers an impressive range of actors, Byzantine, “Barbarians,” Muslims of various backgrounds, Norman, Aragonese, English, Angevin, Crusader, Viking, the Hanse, French, and the several Italian states. Stanton effectively weaves together rather technical discussions of warship design, seafaring and the sailor’s life, naval strategy and tactics, complex diplomacy, comments on people, commerce, cultures, all of which makes for a lot of history, not just maritime history. An excellent feature is that for some particularly important operations, Stanton follows his summary overview in his main text with deeper analysis in chapter annexes titled “Exemplary Engagement.” Many of the events he covers, such as Byzantine-Muslim or Aragonese-Angevin wars are likely to be unfamiliar with English-speaking readers, which makes this a particularly valuable book.'
