When Cadence’s past comes back to threaten her and her life is on the line, Levi might be the safety net she never realized she needed. But will Levi still care about Losing an Edge to his biggest rival, or can he finally step out of his brother’s shadow to become the hero in his own game?

"Emotional and unexpected." ~Diane's Book Blog"I didn't think there would be serious competition for my favorite Storm player or Portland Storm book...but Losing an Edge and 501 may just be up there with Cam and Delay of Game." ~Debbie, Goodreads"I am about to write something that will undoubtedly shake a few foundations: 501 is my favorite Babcock." ~Lissa, Goodreads"Catherine Gayle writes a buildup to a goal both on the ice and off the ice like no other." ~Save Your Money For Books

From the Author
Dear reader,

The books of the Portland Storm series are hockey romances, but they go much deeper than the sport of hockey. These books touch on real-world issues such as rape, cancer, miscarriage, bullying, PTSD, grief, addiction, and many other similar subjects. If you have triggers, be aware that these books may very well contain material which could trigger you. That said, I endeavor to tackle these issues with sensitivity and compassion.

Additionally, many readers have requested that I put a TISSUE WARNING on the books in this series. I've received notes from readers about every single book in the series, in which readers tell me how the characters and the story brought them to tears. You may not need tissues for each book--the story line that resonates most for you may not be the one that others responded to in that way--but don't say I didn't warn you.

On that note, I have another warning for you: my hockey players curse like...well...hockey players. And there is a fair amount of sex in these books. If cursing and sex aren't your cup of tea, these books probably won't be, either.

Catherine Gayle is a wonderful fixture in my favorite author list.
By Dal M
Catherine Gayle is a wonderful fixture in my favorite author list. I know she'll deliver smiles and sexiness wrapped up in a heartfelt, touching story.

Levi “501” Babcock can’t seem to find his footing in the NHL and he’s desperate to surpass Jamie, his super successful, super competent teammate and older brother. But exceeding his brother’s wake is not an easy feat and would settle for beating him at pin the tail on the donkey until he meets Canada’s darling, Olympic gold figure skating medalist Cadence Johnson, otherwise known as one of his other teammate’s younger sister. Can he convince himself and everyone else that he’s the perfect man for her?
He was so persistent, but without being pushy. I wasn’t sure what to do with him, but there was no denying I wanted to be around him.”

Cadence Johnson went to Portland to be with her brother, get away from her abusive ex-partner and ex-boyfriend and find a new beginning. She’s more than ready for a fresh start on many fronts except when it comes to dating, especially a man like Levi. Can she overcome her self-doubt and accept Levi’s advances especially when her past is still threatening her?
“She was the fuck-me-sideways-and-hang-me-up-wet kind of hot that always got me in trouble.”

Cadence and Levi’s courtship was measured but so sweet and sexy. Both Levi and Cadence have issues of their own. You would think that two people with problems such as theirs wouldn’t be good together much less good for each other, but they totally work.
“His hand kept brushing against mine, and then he curled his pinky finger around to lock with my pinky—not holding hands, exactly, but close.”

It was sad to see how Levi was so self-deprecating, how he just couldn’t see his own strengths and potential and suffered under his brother’s shadow. But despite his insecurities, Levi gently but firmly cracks Cadence’s walls. Mrs. Babcock has raised wonderful men, because both Jamie and Levi are hard on the outside when it’s called for and soft and sweet on the inside. Cadence was not the only one who couldn’t resist falling for this addictive man.

Abuse is a terrible thing to suffer from, especially when psychological because without the physical evidence the victim is often unaware of it until it’s too late. I felt so bad for what Cadence had gone through and the fear she still had. I couldn’t even bring myself to want to smack her over the head a couple of times because she simply didn’t see how much she’d been under her ex-boyfriends thumb. I was so glad that she and Levi found each other, she saw all his charming awesomeness, his kindness. And Levi proved just how a good a man he is.
“Levi was funny and patient, humble and outrageously kind.”

I loved having the gang from the previous books back. As always, the Portland Storm isn’t just a hockey team, it’s a family who affectionately takes care of their own. It was endearing to see Hammer championing Levi and the wives and girlfriends rallying around Cadence. I especially loved having Sophie (from Home Ice, book #7.5) as a huge part of the story, every scene she was in had me smiling like a loon and even a bit weepy. And I can’t not mention Connor, Cadence’s nephew, who was a total hoot.
“Daddy! We’re gonna feed the mother*cker to the agilators!”

Losing an Edge is book #8 in the Portland Storm series by author Catherine Gayle. This is a beautifully appealing romance that includes all the excitement of the NHL. This is standalone full length novel, told from alternating points of view with a happy ending.
“Play our way. Skate fast. Fight hard.”

4.5 stars -- Levi shines
By Rachel M
Levi Babcock, 501 to his teammates, feels like he is in constant competition with his older brother, Jamie. On the ice he is always making mistakes, making him less of a player than Jamie, and off ice he has nothing in his life figured out. When he sees Cadence Johnson, a teammate’s sister, at a New Year’s party, he figures she is perfect to one up his brother off the ice. As an Olympic figure skater, she beautiful, famous, and the perfect match for him, if he can get her to give him a chance, that is.

Cadence Johnson is looking for a fresh start. Moving in with her brother and finding a new skating partner after a major injury and split from her former partner/boyfriend, she finds it hard to trust men. The similarities she easily finds between Levi and her ex make it difficult for Cadence to feel anything but fear in Levi’s presence.

I loved these two from the start. Levi is so patient, tender and careful with Cadence, quickly learning that he has to tread carefully with her, and not just because of her overprotective brother.

As Cadence’s secrets come out, her reasoning and motivations become clear and add yet another dimension to the whole story. I loved her inner strength, even as she felt weak and made decisions that didn’t always make sense.

The side characters made for great banter and sweet moments. The entire Portland Storm team and their families are in the background, shifting forward as the story allows. I especially loved Sophie’s involvement with the story. Her character, and the bridge she provides between Cadence and Levi were the perfect blend of sweet and touching. Connor, Cadence’s nephew, is a firecracker in preschooler form and his antics had me laughing out loud.

This was an easy, fun read that put me in a great mood. The level of drama both between the main characters and the other major conflicts was entertaining without being angsty. I finished this book with a carefree feeling and I appreciated the smooth storytelling throughout.

A book you'll never want to end!
By CINDY F.
Catherine Gayle never ceases to amaze me...EVERY...SINGLE...TIME!!! This book was so fantastic, so much so, that I never wanted it to end. And while Jamie (aka Babs) Babcock has always been my all time favorite, Levi has become a very, very close second. He's always been somewhat of a brooder up to this point, and now I know why. After all; it's hard trying to live in someone else's shadow all your life, especially when that person is also the one person you love and respect the most.

Just like his brother Jamie; Levi is always so sweet to almost every single person he comes in contact with. Both brother's seem to have brought up the right way, as far as I'm concerned. But....I don't mind admitting that my poor, poor heart instantly melts every single time we get to see the way Levi interacts with sweet little Sophie. Yes, the way they first met was a bit unconventional, but it's the way he swept her up into his arms that day, and the way that he has continued to treat her like a true princess from that day on that won my heart, and Sophie's too, for that matter.

I loved Cadence from the very start. I am so glad that she finally decided to leave her old skating partner to move to Portland. After all; it takes a lot of courage to leave a situation like that and she deserves to be with someone who respects her. And just like Levi; she loves her family and cares deeply for her friends. Although, I found it very understandable why she would initially be cautious of Levi in the beginning, especially after putting up with Guy, the control freak for years. I thought Levi and Cadence made a very cute couple, and no one could deny their instant chemistry. It was off the charts HOTTTTT!!!!

It was nice to be able to catch up with some of our past favorite like: Jamie and Katie, Jonny, Sara and their kids, Hammer, Koz, Bergy, Paige, Sophie, Ghost, and Harry. I also thought that Cadence's new friends Anthony and Jesse were not only a great addition to the group, but they sort of made me giggle quite a few times along the way, too. I hope that's not the last we see of them though, I think they should hang around awhile longer to keep things interesting. We also got to spend a little time with some other upcoming potential love interests for a couple of the guys.

But the one that made me laugh the most, well besides sweet little Sophie....was little Connor. What a holy terror, but Lord, you've got to love that little demon! ;) Jonny and Sara are sure gonna have their hands full by the time that kid reachs his teenage years. lol!

Bravo to Catherine Gayle for giving us yet another fabulous addition to this Portland Storm team, and their family and friends. I love the way you throw in a little suspense into the mix to keep us on our toes, you always include a serious issue or two, in order to make us all more aware about those who may be suffering all around us on a daily basis in real life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for just being the great writer you are.
