Nicely-Done Photo-Guide to the Flying Fort!

In all probability, more books have been written on Boeing's B-17 Flying Fortress than any other military or civilian aircraft. Over the years, Squadron/Signal has done at least six B-17 books including two previous B-17 IN ACTION titles. David Doyle's B-17 FLYING FORTRESS IN ACTION, S/S #1219, is the latest - and best - B-17 offering from this publisher.
After a brief introduction, Doyle examines the development and history of each B-17 model by model starting with the Model 299 prototype, Y1B-17, Y1B-17A, B-17B, B-17C, B-17D, B-17E, B-17F and B-17G as well as special models such as the YB-40, XB-38 and B-17H/SB-17G.
Visually Doyle's book is eye candy for all B-17 buffs. It runs to 80 pages and features over 250 well-captioned b&w and color photographs, color side-views and diagrams of Boeing's most famous bomber. Indeed it looks like Doyle crammed every color B-17 pix extant in this softcover. As always, Don Greer's cover artwork and color profiles are first-rate. The b&w illustrations by Matheu Spraggins were especially noteworthy as they depict the various airframe and equipment details, developments and modifications that ran through the B-17's lifetime.
All in all, B-17 FLYING FORTRESS IN ACTION is a wonderful photographic history and tribute to Boeing's iconic bomber. Selling for $16.95, it's a bargain...and a treat! Recommended.

Excellent Book

Excellent work that covers many never before seen photos of the B-17 bombers and the men who flew them. There is a giant color section as well. These books are perfect for people who want to learn more about the specifications and various changes of the B-17 over time, or who want to model the B-17 in scale model kits or dioramas and who want to achieve true to life historical accuracy. This may be the best Squadron B-17 In Action book to date.

AN EXCELLENT EDITION!

I agree with Michael O'Connor,(Wordsmith), this is truly "eye candy" for the B-17 enthusiast (ME!). I have recently purchased many titles regarding the B-17 and I believe this one to be the best. The cover artwork (superbly executed by Don Greer) of the Memphis Belle is awesome to say the least! Other Squadron Signal Publications that I have acquired and highly recommend: B-17 in Action - Aircraft No. 63 Walk Around: B-17 Flying Fortress and B-17G Flying Fortress - Walk Around No. 67. David Doyle's editions are more current and best in my opinion! I have a Listmania List devoted to the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress that you can access here at Amazon. I have been studying the B-17 bomber intensely as my father-in-law was a tail gunner on a B-17 with the 15th Air force and I wanted a better appreciation for how he fought and survived the war! These books helped me to achieve a greater respect for the airmen of World War 2.
