Kevin Jackson is married and has three children. He is an experienced IT professional working with business and enterprises of all sizes at Rackspace as an OpenStack and private cloud specialist. Kevin has been working with OpenStack since early 2011 and has extensive experience of various flavors of Linux, Unix, and hosting environments. Kevin can be found on Twitter at @itarchitectkev. Cody Bunch is a principal architect in the Rackspace Private Cloud group based out of San Antonio, Texas. Egle Sigler

Egle Sigler is an OpenStack Foundation board member and a principal architect in the Rackspace Private Cloud group based out of San Antonio, Texas. Egle holds an M.S. degree in computer science. She started her career as a software developer and still has a soft spot for all the people who write, test, and deploy code, since she has had the chance to do all of those tasks throughout her career. Egle dreams about a day when writing, testing, and deploying code will be a seamless and easy process―bug and frustration free for all. Egle believes that knowledge should be shared and has tried to do this by writing this book, giving talks and workshops at conferences, and blogging. Egle can be found on Twitter at @eglute. Great book overall. These days I don't think that you should deploy OpenStack this way, even for dev support systems. However it is a great learning experience to do it manually and this book takes that approach, and you learn a lot along the way.

If you're into details, skip this one. One minute, she's wearing flats with her librarian outfit, the next heels. Her mother's wedding is on Saturday, the next day it's a weekday. She keeps calling people on their home phones, instead of their cell phones (WHY???? If it's a murder case, WHY call people on their home phones or only give out your home number instead of cell number?). Three days pass, but she calls it 48 hours. The bachelorette party is tonight (as her Faux Dad calls to remind her) and she tells herself she needs to call her best friend and ask her to go with her to the bachelorette party tomorrow night. I could go on and on, but I won't. There are so many more FREE Kindle books that aren't this messed up. I can't even finish reading this one.

About the Author

Dr. Brian L. Withrow is Professor of Criminal Justice at Texas State University–San Marcos. Prior to joining the Texas State University faculty in 2009, Brian was an Associate Professor and Director of the Forensic Sciences Program at Wichita State University. While on the faculty at Wichita State University, Dr. Withrow served one term as Mayor of Bel Aire, Kansas. From 1993 to 1999, Dr. Withrow managed a police leadership development program at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Prior to his scholarly career Brian worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety. He started this part of his career in 1981 as a State Trooper in a rural part of the Texas Panhandle. During the nearly 13 years Brian was at DPS he was promoted to the rank of Training Officer, Inspector, and Bureau Commander.

Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1981, his Masters of Public Administration from Southwest Texas State University in 1993, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in 1999.

Dr. Withrow lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Lisa. They have four grown children and two grandchildren. Brian is an Eagle Scout and continues to remain active in in the Boy Scouts of America. Currently he serves as the Commissioner for the Sacred Springs District.

This well-written introduction exposes students to digital signal processing in a computer environment. Through a series of projects and exercises, the text helps students develop confidence in manipulating discrete-time signals without having to write and debug large programs. Included are a summary of many concepts basic to signal processing and a library of DSP computer functions that run on personal computers. Included with the text is a disk with stand-alone programs that perform elementary signal processing functions.

The software is easy to use with an on-line help function that explains the usage of all DSP functions. This allows students to concentrate on DSP principles instead of details related to software usage.
The topics covered include practical applications that help students relate DSP concepts to real-world problems.
Exercises can be modified easily in many cases to provide variety from year to year. This encourages independent work and discourages copying the lab work from students in previous classes.
Exercises are designed for easy grading; for example, many exercises call for a hand-drawn sketch that can often be graded by inspection.
All exercises have been student tested at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Chapter 7 includes 9 projects that provide an opportunity for students to apply a variety of DSP concepts and exercise their creativity.

About the Author
Yi Ren taught and did research in Beijing after graduating from Tsinghua University. On moving to the U.S. she began to teach Chinese to children at weekend Chinese Schools, and also to tutor others in Chinese. After years of being worn down by her adult students' begging her to do it, Yi decided to capture her special teaching methods on paper, in a book to help other adult Chinese learners. She lives with her family in Denver, Colorado.

Xiayuan Liang practiced medicine in China before coming to the United States in 1986. She did biomedical research at Washington University in St. Louis and Georgetown University, then resumed her career as a physician. She currently is an associate professor at University of Colorado School of Medicine. In her spare time, Xiayuan likes to read and to discuss interesting topics with friends—in Chinese, of course!

Great start to an amazing experience

The one word that comes to mind about Ren and Liang's book is balanced - a balanced, nuanced approach for the student learning Chinese, for those just beginning or with some experience. It is divided into 16 chapters, plus a section on Pinyin, the Chinese written with Roman letters.

Within each of these chapters there is a stimulating organization of learning experiences - of words, phrases, cultural aspects, as well as idioms and poetry. The layout of the pages and chapters is very attractive. In my experience learning Chinese is so much more than learning the words and phrases. Rather it is the cultural experience that helps put the language in perspective. In this context this book takes the tedium out and puts fun in.

An audio cd to help with pronunciation is excellent, clearly enunciated though at times a little fast for the uninitiated. The recording themselves nonetheless reflect the beauty of Chinese sounds and give a beginner some real tools to internalize these unique sounds and tonalities. It is these tonal patterns which give pause to Westerners but which nonetheless give a richness and depth to learning Chinese. Throughout there are Chinese characters for reference, but not dominant and never getting in the way. The poems are in translation, of course, as well as pinyin and Chinese characters to good effect, rare to find all three together. Nice touch.

As a part-time student of Chinese for the past three years (starting when I was 67), I find this book Chinese For Beginners to be very useful, as well as motivating. I highly recomment this book.

This book can be useful if you want to "learn about Chinese" or survey the language in a limited way without getting technical : there are no grammar explanations. If you are going to China, want to read up on the culture, learn a few phrases and see how they sound, and only study for a few days, then this book may be for you. If you want to actually "learn Chinese", this book is not for you. Nor is it a good entry point into the language because it is essentially a phrase book. The audio files are fragmented in a way that there is not much to salvage there either.

The "Mastering" in "Chinese For Beginners: Mastering Conversational Chinese" can be misleading since you won't master anything with this book. So can the claim "Speed your learning with Key sentence patterns". This inaccurate presentation is why it gets one star.

This is the type of language book that looks nice when you open it and flip through the pages because there are illustrations, boxes of text with explanations and nice formatting, but is of limited substance.

I have a lot of experience learning foreign languages and my intention is to get a working knowledge of Mandarin, so I borrowed this book from the library - mostly to see what the audio files are like. I will return it promptly.

What a book!!!!

Mastering Conversational Chinese, Chinese for Beginners is the best introductory book for teaching Mandarin you could ask for. I spent 3 years in China. Yi Ren was my first Mandarin teacher. I studied with her before I left and remember her saying our book we used wasn't the best. I had just had a few months of lessons before I left and continued to study while in China. I had 4 teachers and 4 different books. Yi and I continued to stay in touch when I would be in town.

When I ordered her book I was amazed at the way it was put together. I wished I had been able to have it in the beginning. The other books I had used were not as organized and easy to understand. The effort that was put into it made it so much easier and much more fun. The Special Notes, Useful Sentences and Extended Vocabulary were consistent with every chapter. The Cultural tips all throughout the book would have been so helpful to me in China if I had them in the beginning. To understand the culture helps so much in learning the language. The Poetry, Songs and Pictures are so interesting. The way sentence structure was taught was invaluable and not done well in the other books I have used. Not that I am living stateside again I use it to brush up on what I know and use the CD to practice as well. I highly recommend this book. I am hoping there will be another book as well.

A wonderful book on Levy process

The authors not only understand the math, but also integrate the math with financial economics well. I think Levy process is the way to go in the next decade. For example, fundamentally speaking, Brownian motion cannot explain the equity premium puzzle, hence people resort to other factors, such as incomplete market, behaviors, prospect theory, etc. However, behavioral explanations cannot stand in the long run. Prospect theory may reveal what a "normal" person usually do, but once it is revealed, a normal person can get "smarter" and overcome his/her impetus in making suboptimal decisions. Then behavioral andirrational explanation will fail (eventually). One thing I found from my own research is that the Levy process may be an important yet often ignored factor that can explain unexplained issues in finance, hence we do not have to reply on shaky behavioral and irrational arguments. One last point, behavioral can be either rational (good, correct and acceptable) or irrational (bad and should be got rid of. This would be the long long journey for a person who has deep beliefs in science).

The strong quality for a mathematical view in economics

This book is an approach to economics in according to a very strong mathematical structure.
It is simply to explicate the concept why Tankov apply the Lévy processes.
The Black-Scholes theory is failed and we use the existence of jump to approximate better the financial phenomena.
